No doubt, shallots is more nutritious than onions. But it's very difficult to peel of its skin for its use consuming more time. So, many housewives keep away from them. We, South Indians can't exclude it from our diet even for a single day, even if it's quantity is small.
What about you? Do you consume it frequently?

I have never used this. It appears that this is not available in North India.

It looks similar to Onions, but very small in size. So, it consumes a lot of time to clean it. But it's more tasty than normal onions if added to dishes.
It may even take more than 1 hour to clean 2 cups of it. But if we make Chicken curry, sambar etc with shallots, it tastes best. More nutritious too.
We chop 1 or 2 shallots while popping mustard seeds in oil before adding to curries, fry it light brown, which gives a nice smell to the curries. We may add red chillies too.....

We don't get these much here,. but when I do find them, I often buy and use them in curries. I like its taste a lot! But its not freely available.

Somewhat...

It belongs to Onion catagory.......costs also double price.
Yet, if we are able to consume at least half kg every week, it's very healthy. It has many medicinal values too....
It's a best medicine to wound, reduce bp, healthy heart etc....
To remove wounded nails also, it's used. Just crush it and tie it on the finger tightly with a piece of cotton.
It can be added while making chutney too....tastes best than normal onions.

Only problem is time consumption.

It's used for all types of 'Theeyal' curries where grated coconut is fried, grind and added to both veg and non-veg curries. It tastes better.
While frying coconut also, adding chopped shallots and curry leaves give a nice odour.

I don't think I have eat something like this, or may be I don't remember... People here used to eat normal onions only.

Actually, Onions came to Kerala only a few years back. Till then, people here used only shallots for making curries. Onions are more easy to clean and slice. So, they replaced shallots in kitchens very quickly

So now they are using onions instead of shallots.. right.. What about taste? Same as onion?
