We have had several proposal in Karnataka to part privatise Electricity and Gas with disastrous results as you know. Both KEB and BSNL employees went on a strike and worse most people supporting them...people tend to think that privatisation is worse than Public sectors ..

Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are two steps ahead !!!

Even if they do not privatize some of the industries, they should allow private players to enter into the sector. Like you can see in telecom sector, every scenario has been changed. Why not electric to go the same way? What is government doing in so many industries with no competition and still in loss.

Electricity is natural monopoly. It is not feasible to have multiple electricity companies in an area. In Mumbai, there are multiple electricity companies but these operate in different parts of city allocated to them. At Agra, Torrent Power is distributing electricity for more than a year. But in rural area, U.P. state electricity Company is distributing electricity. Thus a consumer cannot choose between different electricity companies.

So it is a better option to go in for a part divestment where private companies too can have a say in the matter. This is bound to increase efficiency and probably bring down corruption levels too..

No i don't think so that everything should be made private.
If we do it,then what the need of Government?

In US every thing is in private sector apart defense, home security and health! Do you think they are doing worse than us? I am in favor of privatization.

They should bring distribution under private sector on priority where most of the corruption takes place. There are many private producers in small scale who are making it and selling to state electricity boards, while smaller players can do it why not on a bigger scale. Later it can be sent to a central pool for distribution through a proper channel. Electricity is being produced and sold by every big industry in many areas.

Although government run industries are better in terms of security, the examples of such industries in India is not very favorable in terms of economic sustenance. Take example of Air India, lack of efficient and strong leadership has led it fall down to ground very heavily. Another disease that corrodes government-run enterprises is the existence of corruption at all levels, it is at least a lot lesser in private industries. In private industries, there is a clearly defined hierarchical pattern and people are held accountable and responsible when things go wrong which sort of puts ill practices at bay, which is why I favor privatisation over government run enterprises!

The private sector is not corrupt. This is corrupter. Late Dhirubhai Ambani use to say that he would 'salute' even a poet in government office. The private sector has its own part in corrupting the government departments and bribing them. The cooperation of government department by getting bribe profits the private undertakings. The govt employees get bribe and private sector give bribe. This goes to enrich the private and impoverish the government.

However, it is not job of government to run business. So, it is best to privatize most of business. But here also, there is one significant point. The private sector are only for profits and not for social interest. They will not undertake any business that does not give them more profit in short or medium term. To illustrate, it is left to government undertakings to provide telecommunication service, infrastructure in remote area. Private sector will not go there. This assignment of less profitable or no profit assignments by government undertakings also results in low profit. It is not only lack of efficiency but also need for taking less remunerative assignments that cause less profits to govt. undertakings.

I agree Gulshan, which is why I am in favor of privatisation of all business enterprises. Where any enterprise is run by government, they are controlled mostly by the ruling parties. I am not really an expert or much knowledgeable about economic matters, but the ever-increasing prices in petroleum products is a perfect example of government policy of trying to keep everyone happy in favor of votes. Already the petroleum industry is facing huge losses owing to the subsidies given on petrol prices and yet they have not increased the price of petrol as would have been desirable to avoid more losses, just to keep a certain politician happy speaks volumes about their faulty policies!

Air India is a big blot on the nation, and it is so difficult to hold any one department or official responsible for the state of things as it stands today.we are definitely better off with privatisation like UK and other European nations have done..

True!!! Its a perfect example of how government-run agencies lack efficiency and quality!! Has any one ever travelled via Air India planes??? I have and the experience truly left a bitter taste, of course, the pilots were very efficient but the flight attendants were too rude to every one and in my opinion, most of those ladies deserve to be retired in favor of more pleasant younger ladies! A major reason why people prefer private airlines!

I too find the Air India flight staff highly arrogant, as if they are dong you a favor , and the international flights are pathetic, makes you bow down your head with shame since nothing is proper and if there are any foreigners travelling ,I can imagine what opinion they would carry !

Because they are employed by the government, they are not at all bothered by "what would other people think" the same policy that is adopted during the free-for-all sessions in the parliament employed by the political leaders!!!

Were it a private enterprise, they wouldn't dare to be so rude and arrogant!!

Had this not been for private companies the country would have gone to dogs. This is the hard work, reputation and willingness to stay in competition that is making things going for us. I cannot see we going ahead without handing over every thing except health, security and domestic security to private sector.
