It's a revelation.very few people know about the negative side of Tree plantation. Indiscriminate planting of saplings without taking in to consideration, the place and the surroundings will prove counterproductive .A thought provoking article.

Many years back an Australian tree had become the darling of government sponsored tree plantation programs. It grew very fast and thus could be seen as proof of program success. Soon it was observed that the water table in such areas went down because it drew lot os water to grow fast. In fact it was labeled as an evaporator. Also it hardly grew more than 6-7 inches in diameter. It thus had no use except for being used in scaffolding s in construction industry. After a few years it was no longer planted. it was not native to India and was not planted scientifically.
In flats and narrow places where saplings are planted, over a period damage the walls causing fatal accidents and wall collapses.
The pressure of space for human settlements has led to trees being cut in lakhs all over the country. Today in many cities heat is reflected by the concrete tall buildings and monsoon water has no place to go over concrete surfaces. In city planning a balance needs to be made between buildings and trees.

Urban planning is in a primitive stage now. Our planners should wake up.

Urban planning in India is digging and more digging and more digging and still more digging throughout the year every year. All planning is underground.

Yes, those were eucalytptus trees which depleted our natural water tables severely but now many organisations have woken up and are researching a lot before planting trees. Near my place there is a hill range where an organisation has undertaken the task of covering the range with indigenous trees along with other hills in Pune. Since last 3 years they have planted almost 20,000 trees that are endemic to Pune region and these people regularly take care of the saplings in shifts. They have especially taken care to plant only those trees which grow naturally in this area. This type of awareness is now increasing.

Few voluntary non profit organizations are doing yeomen service in boosting the awareness on importance of tree plantation. They not only supply free saplings, see the suitability of the plant to the soil conditions and surroundings of your residential area. It's not all. they monitor the growth of the plant on regular basis. Offer suggestions and hold regular seminars on importance of planting in educational institutions.
In my native place, I do not know the english name of tree but people used to plant it apart from coconut due to sea side town, and the first plant they do is to stop the storm as they can break the force of wind considerably.
