Personally, I give 10%-15% of the bill amount as tip depending on the level of service I have received. (I don't give tip if the service level is pathetic but it has not happened yet, generally waiters are nice to me ;) )
Some waiters say that they do not get any salary but they survive on tips only. Is that true- although possible.
Personally, I don't think anyone would agree to such an arrangement. It is too risky. May be waiter would be given a less salary and would have the freedom to take whatever the customers tip them and not share it with others.
I used to stay in an ordinary hotel way back where the one who served my room always said he was working on tips only and a place to stay plus meals. That was a small town in Mp.

You cannot tip to a cleaner because you never see a cleaner in operation. They never take you to a dirty table. They allow customers to a cleaned table only.

I think giving tip is a way to encourage the good work of waiter/cleaner :) :)

You are right but cleaners are no where in pictures, this waiters only who come and serve you. Also they collect the bill as well.

Most of the time the cleaning job is done by young boys who are legally not supposed to be doing it. You feel so sorry for them, underpaid and working to take care of their home or families while they should be carefree and in school...
Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are two steps ahead !!!

This happens only in smaller places but not in big hotels where trained staff is appointed to do the job. In small places those boys work for meals only.

But sunil, smaller hotels are much greater in number and the working force too bigger than the more expensive hotels where they make sure that they adhere to the rules and legalities..

I agree but none cares to pay tips much in those smaller places so I thought this was all about bigger places.
