Is married life a hindrance to Indian ladies entering active politics?

See the most successful lady politicians of our country - Jayalalithaa, Uma Bharati, Mamata Banerjee or Mayavati ....They are all single. Sonia Gandhi too not an exception. She entered active politics only after Rajiv Gandhi's assassination. Seeing these instances, isn't it true to believe that to dedicate fully to social service, Indian women need to sacrifice their dreams to become a good wife and mother to children?

Yes. Of Course. There is no doubt on this. But there are always exceptions. Few Indian women achieve in politics balancing their family life.

Do You mean the term single woman without marriage will do wonders in their life but then there is already a shortage of women and if all of them decided to live single- there will be a time when there will be no women and no men. Just imagine the scene and then decide who would you rule over?

Being free from any encumbrances makes any man or woman to concentrate on the field they love. It need not be exactly marriage though marriage is one of the reasons that hinder the much needed concentration.
That’s the reason for the success of the said politicians you mentioned in the question.
No one wants to become a ‘Jack of all trades but master of none.’

Married life is a hinderance in all aspects of life to men and women both. Being single gives freedom to take your own decisions and give whole hearted and whole time devotion to your cause- may be politics, career, scientific pursuit or spiritual goal. Married life is for those with ordinary pursuits and no higher goals.

There is commitment and responsibility to a much greater extent when you are married, so it is not easy to manage a successful and gruelling career like politics when you also have to manage your own family. However there are quite a few successful lady politicians who are married like Brinda Carat of CPI, Sushma Swaraj of BJP, Smriti Irani of BJP, Ambika Soni of Congress and so on...they have been able to balance both successfully although it may not be easy to do so..

Gulshan Kumar Ajmani when husband and wife both are politicians or social worker, married life may be more helpful rather than hinderance. For example, Brindia Karat and her husband Prakash Karat are both in same political party and so their married life is helpful to both in political and social pursuit. - Gulshan Kumar Ajmani - 11 years ago
Sandhya Rani Ya, in most these cases, either father or spouses of these ladies are politicians. Most important fact is, whether male or female, support from family, unfortunately that may not always happen in the case of females and they choose some another career option instead..... - Sandhya Rani - 10 years ago

This question of yours reminded me about the Hindi movie titled 'Aandhi'. If both of them are politicians then it should not be a hindrance because the husband can easily understand his wife as he is aware of the nature of their political work. Remember, both should be of the same political party or else there can be another type of problem in their married life. It will be difficult for the service holders to accept an active politician wife as the husband will have a fixed service time while wife will have no such fixation and the problem between them will crop up even though they want to avoid it.

No doubt, married life is a hindrance for Indian ladies entering in politics. If they enter in politics, they cannot perform their duties very well like women those who are single because they have some commitments towards their family. Married women always give more importance to their family and so they do not have time to serve the society. If they enter in politics, they family life will be a great failure.
