S. D Burman or R. D Burman - Who is brilliant/talented?

If I ask, who is popular, most of you people will answer "R. D", as his youth oriented and it appeals youngsters even today after 40 or 50 years......He has also composed songs on Raga, though known for fast tracks.

A few years back, when I asked the above question to a great lover of old Hindi songs, he said, "Undoubtedly it's S. D". Is he right?

It's told, no comparisons between geniuses. Yet it's an interesting fact to know who is best, if they are siblings, cousins or parents/kids...... Comparisons are quite common in Bollywood.

SD Burman was more talented than his son.

They are both similar in many ways yet because of the generation gap have composed differently, bith equally talented and brilliant. However I feel that S D BURman is unparelleled since he is the senior who trained his son and brought him up to be what he is. RD Burman is no doubt one of the best music composers ever but his father has a slight edge over him..

Sandhya Rani One year back when I prepared the list of 10 best music directors of Bollywood (for an article of Boddunan), I gave 2nd position to S.D and 4th to R.D (1st to SJ and 3rd to Madan Mohan). Seeing your answer, I feel I was right!!! (But somehow I forgot the talent of O. P. Nayyar to be added in best 10) - Sandhya Rani - 10 years ago

You have already mentioned that geniuses should not or cannot be compared, so to answer you, though S.D Burman is the father and also teacher of R.D. Burman without whom R.D.Burman would have not been able to compose so many songs and contributed to Bollywood, however I like R.D. Burman more.

Both were equally good but SD was original and more Indian. I will go for SD.

Sandhya Rani A few days back, I happened to see a video of copied songs.....It was nothing less than a shock, when I found one of the best songs of Asha - Chura liya hai tumne was a direct lift from an English song. I think, the strategy of direct lift from foreign songs became popular since 1970s. That may be the reason why since 1970s songs look more westernized than Indian - Sandhya Rani - 10 years ago
suni51 I don't want to name but there are so many who lifted right from different cinemas including Indian regional - suni51 - 10 years ago

Both of them have their legendary compositions and quite frankly, they should not be compared with each other.
