Daily soaps or old Doordarshan serials?
I think daily soaps started in the year 1994 with Shanti on Doordarshan, followed by Swabhiman. With cable network boom, small screen got completely dominated by daily soaps. If I recollect from memory serials shown on Doordarshan in the early 1990s or late 1980s (except Chandrakanta, Ramayana and Mahabharata - 1 hr episodes every Sunday mornings), all serial episodes last for just half an hour and we need to wait one full week to see its next episode. But it's nice to see the continuation episode exactly after a week. Also, they will end in 13 episodes....
But what's the scene now??? Kabhi Sauthen Kabhi Saheli played for long 11 years. Same is the case of other soaps. Earlier, quality was the prime aim rather than TRP ratings. Now everything is based on TRP ratings....As long as TRP ratings are high, episodes go on, go on and go on. Otherwise, the show winds up within a year. Also how many techniques...Plastic surgery to replace a new actor, killing the character if an actor is to quit the show....bringing him back to the show as re-birth or something else if TRP rating goes low....It's nothing short of 'real-life comedy shows'. Isn't it ridiculous?
personally i don't have even a single moment to waste for this useless soaps. But I regularly used to watch Doordarshan serials...Udaan, Ghutan, Mrignayani, Tehkikaat, Mashaal, Phulwanti etc on Doordarshan in the 1990s, during my teens. Shaktimaan too...haha (till its episodes started dragging). Buniyaad, Karamchand, Malgudi days etc are still nostalgic for many.
Which one do you prefer - daily soaps or weekly? Do you think quality of present day serials are good than those played in the 1980s and 1990s? I think films have advanced very much and now directors are experimenting with new subjects. But in the case of serials, it's still centuries backward - old stories of traditional homes, grand weddings, saas-bahu quarrels etc etc....
