Why all old female playback voices look similar?
You can closely notice (mostly) female voices of 1950s-1970s of different languages. Doesn't they own similarities? Their singing style is entirely different from playback voices of today. Why is so? Is it because of recording techniques used? Or is it because female voices opted same singing style? Or any other specific reason?
Very often Susheela and Janaky sing the south Indian female version of many evergreen classics sung by Lata and Asha. I feel there is a striking similarity in voices. I have noticed many Tamil songs of Janaky sang in the 1990s and later, and her singing style is quite matching to Asha Bhosle.Asha has sung a few Tamil songs during this period, and so I often fail to recognize the difference between these two voices. 'Yaar Bina Chein Kaha Re' is originally sung by Janaky, whose voice resembles Asha.
For instance go through the Tamil versions of evergreen classics of Lata - Lag Ja Gale and Nayana Barse and feel the same. Links are below. Tamil version of Lag Ja Gale sung by Susheela is unbelievable, particularly the starting element - nostalgic humming!!!!
