Definitely my first choice is Mughal-e-Azam. Though it took 12 long years to bring the dream to silverscreen, its efforts still remain a great wonder, not less than the 7 great wonders of world. If inflation figures are adjusted, perhaps it's the most expensive film ever made on silverscreen and its gross collection will always remain at the top. Each and every frame of the movie worth appreciation. It's always my great film
My second choice is Mother India for the memorable performance of Nargis Dutt - an Indian film that lost academic awards by just one vote! Truly it deserves the position in top 3.
Third choice is Pyaasa. The rest films never deserve position in top 5. Do bheega zameen, Bandini and Do aakhen barah haath could be better choices than Sholay and the rest. I have watched Sholay several times, yet can't point out why this movie has become such a huge hit
My first choice will always be Mugh-E-Azam for obvious reasons - it was the first magnum opus in the history of Indian Cinema, with magnificent and lavish sets, beautiful music scores and equally great performances by the cast.
Second choice is Mother India for stellar performances by the leading actors and its strong storyline of triumph of good over evil, especially the part where a mother kills her own evil son.
Third choice is of course, Sholay, a cult movie that broke all records of Hindi cinema. Though the serious contender is Pyasa, Sholay was and will become memorable for a variety of reasons. Firstly, it achieved the distinction of becoming the first truly Indian Western movie with all the paraphernalia such as horses, guns, horse-riding bandits, an outlawed and evil bandit leader and a couple of heroes who are originally outlawed criminals. The film was extremely good on all scores, acting, screenplay, music, strong dialogues etc. So this is the best contender for third choice.
Pyaasa would definitely be on my list. It's a pure masterpiece by Guru Dutt. One more film i would like to add to the list is RANG DE BASANTI. Such brilliance in all respects of filmmaking needs to be appereciated.
I wold say Mughal-e-Azam to be the best movies among the choices yo gave. Its dialogue,sets,songs,acting everything was superb. I can't forget the dance and set of the song " Jab pyaar kiya to" Madhubala was looking gorgeous in the song.
I will go for Mother India as it was a social movie #1
My second choice is Sholey for its entertainment value
and obviously the Mughle E Azam despite all its fame and acting, sets and historical values is in fourth place after Pyasa, which was a gem for its characters played by great actors.
