Why chefs are mostly men?

Since ancient ages, men has been the breadwinner of the families and ladies, perfect homemaker who prepare dishes and look after children. In the male dominated world, there was an era when cooking was exclusively reserved as 'ladies' job', and many still believe, females are best cooks comparing their husbands. But why, if we look close the chefs across the world, the world famous chefs are men? Why only a few ladies have taken culinary as profession?

I often feel that women are not given enough freedom to exhibit their talent in the art of culinary, and hence men overtook them in this profession also. It's true to some extend. If so, why ladies choose IT, banking, marketing, teaching or research as profession, and have shinned in respective fields? Despite being talented in the art of cooking, why they rarely think of choosing it as a profession? Any idea?

Things are changing now and we get to see quite a few very famous chefs of Indian origin who have become world famous like Madhur Jaffrey , Ritu Dalmia, Neeta Mehta , Anjum Anand. Besides we have our own Pankaj Bhadouria ,Tarla Dalal, Manju Malhi and so many others ..

With marriage becoming a personal choice rather than a goal, Indian women are now exploring every possible avenue as a career choice and cooking and experimenting with food is a natural choice ..

I may not be true. This field needs extensive travels, and she may be needed to stay out of home irrespective of day or night. That may be one reason why she or her husband rarely chooses catering n cooking as profession.

Another reason is, it may be a little funny, but true also. Ladies look after household and prepare dishes at home. As she regularly makes delicious food at home, she is bored to repeat the same task away from home also. Instead she choose some another profession. She needs a change, right?

Also, she feels other professions get more dignity in society, for instance white collar jobs. Passion of cooking can be done at home also, can conduct experiments and feed dear ones with whatever she likes. After all we want to do everything with passion, either it's job or other tasks of life. So why to become a chef (though it's not true always). i am quoting one among several reasons.

I feel as it has been instilled in women that cooking should be her priority among the household chores, she never thought about it as a career option. Taking up a highly qualified profession puts one in high esteem and cooking at home is considered as a nominal work so it was never a promising and prestigious career. Nowadays, people are talking about world famous chefs and all so this option is being tapped and ladies will definitely use their inborn cooking talent as a profession more and more. So, men took cooking as profession because they did not have the best competitors (the ladies) on the field.

It's funny but I would state that men love to eat and so they love cooking too which made them chefs.

Sandhya Rani But only a very few men enter kitchen to cook something :) - Sandhya Rani - 8 years ago
Shampa Sadhya Yes, most of them keep themselves away from kitchen but for that matter mothers and the other ladies of the house are very much responsible. They give them the feeling that you are male and you need not enter the kitchen. Well, those who break this stereotype attitude and try to learn the skill, they certainly do become good cooks. - Shampa Sadhya - 8 years ago

Women are not given freedom to work after increase in their responsibilities like marriage and children so there are less female chefs but times are changing with the increase in technology we are having not only female chefs but granny chefs also . In utube I see videos of grannies who are 97 and 106 years old and they are cooking delicious dishes.

For me I feel that cooking is an art and both male and female equally excel at it. However, the old traditions in the society restrict cooking to the ladies in the house. So these men when they took a profession out of the box, they got a lot of limelight and became known and famous. We also have good female chefs and cooks but still male chefs get more popularity as their profession is in a strike contrast to the social expectations.
