Does Nagmani exist?

My maternal grandfather was a very religious person, who tells us a lot of folklore stories, fairy tells and he was excellent in astrology, mantras and similar things. Since childhood he told us a lot about Nagamani.I still remember this incident that occurred in my early childhood.

there was a big field of beetle plantation near maternal home and no wall in between. It was a joint family then. Once around 8pm or so, all the family members shouted and all were busy in watching something....."Look it's here". But before I could reach there, scene was over. A moment that I repent for years....I lost the sight by just a moment. When others told we have seen it and that snake has swallowed it, I felt deep despair actually. But they promised me to show the scene some another day, which never occurred. Actually my uncle was standing in front of me, and I lost it.

It's believed that there was a very old snake in our fields which had a nagmani. I have heard several times about it. But grandfather has always advised us not to desire of nagmani, because it can bring misfortune to the family and the family will be heir less. Still teens I believed Yes Nagmani exists, everyone in the family has seen it.

But later I got confused. But my grandfather is no more to clear this doubt. I really want to ask him, does an old snake really lived in our fields which shows nagmani every evening. Have he and my uncles seen in many times? Does it really exists? It's interpreted in different ways on websites.

This is a mythological concept. There is no such thing as nag mani. If this were true, Biology/ zoology scholars would know. If I am wrong, I shall request any bilogy/ zoology student or scholar to tell the fact.

It's a myth, which cannot have any scientific evidence. Like Nagamani there are thousands of myths. Unless a scientific evidence is there, it remains as a myth.

Well, to continue Gulshan's response, I am a student of Biology, Zoology to be precise, and I still read a lot of stuff related to animals and their studies and I agree with Gulshan that it is a mere mythological concept, glorified by the Hindi film makers in a rather ludicrous manner. There is no evidence at all of such precious stones being a fact.

Sandhya Rani Most recently I saw a Malayalam movie, not a mythological, but a modern story which tells about people who buys Nagamanikyam. That's why i posted the question here.....But the precious stone is not shown anywhere in the movie....a story abt frauds - Sandhya Rani - 10 years ago
Kalyani Nandurkar Exactly Sandhya, it is because there are people who believe such things exist, there will always be people willing to dupe them of their money. I am not familiar with Malyalam movies but the topic has been explored a lot in most movies to the point of ridicule. Do you know that in the past several conmen have successfully tried to sell even Tajmahal to foolish people who willingly parted with money?? The moral of the story is that, there are people who will sell stuff such as Tajmahal, presence of which cannot be denied because it is there, but it cannot be bought for obvious reasons. So can we believe in the existence of such a thing as Nagmani? Maybe some may choose to, but they better keep their beliefs to themselves or they will definitely meet someone who will con them out of their money by tempting them with Nagmani! - Kalyani Nandurkar - 10 years ago
Sandhya Rani Let me add, snakes are closely linked to Kerala and Tamil Nadu culture, where they are worshiped as gods. Here Hindus rarely kill snakes as if they have committed a sin. That may be the reason why a belief spread, if we stole Nagamanikyam, you will get sin.

let me add, among the 27 stars as per Malayalam astrology, Ayilyam belongs to snakes and every month Ayilya Pooja is conducted in all Siva and Naga temples. In Kerala, in all siva temples Nagaraja is also worshiped. Most families give Aayilya Pooja to temples on Ayilyam day of every month (mostly milk, banana and turmeric powder) and is regarded good to family. Married couples without children also do such worships. There is one famous temple in Alapuzha district - Mannarasala, perhaps the biggest snake temple of India. More than 30,000 snake idols are placed inside the temple premises. A few months back I visited a temple for a special pooja for my daughter.
In old traditional homes, there is a snake temple in almost all homes, a replica of a forest....But now only a few available... due to scarcity of land.

I too tend to go with Gulshan and Kalyani's views. However I also would like to say that nothing is impossible in life. What was impossible a few decades ago has been made possible now , so one can never say what would come out of this age old myth if and when more inventions take place on the issue ..

Nagmani is a mythological concept so though we don't have an evidence to prove its existence..like other mythological stories..this may or may not be true. But, so far, no evidence has been provided so even I agree that it is nothing but a myth.
