How much should we save?

Earlier, when I started online earning, about 2 years ago, I never spent even a single rupee to buy something I wish. Instead I used to pay some loan. Now I have changed a lot. Now I have started thinking that, I should spare a little amount for my own expenses or to buy something I wish. I think, everyone should think the same way as I do as long as he is financially stable. Why not? Only money saving is not the end process of what we call life.

Money can't buy everything we desire. Yet we can fulfill a few wishes with our earned money also. Then only our life becomes complete. Otherwise after retirement period, we may have everything in our hand, good pension schemes, good future for kids etc. But gone years without enjoyment never return back.

So, how much do you save from you earn and how much do you spend for your happiness?

I take care of my necessities and take care of my pleasure by judiciously balancing the necessity and saving. I spend on art material from my earnings from online, which I used to spend from my savings earlier. It means by spending on my art material from my online earnings, I'm saving my original "savings".

Sandhya Rani Nice idea.....to spent online earnings on your hobby. It's fulfillment of our dreams too - Sandhya Rani - 11 years ago
rambabu Besides it takes care of my Internet charges too, which would have been spent from my normal savings. This itself is a good way of "saving". - rambabu - 11 years ago

First of all, congratulations for completing two years (8 or 9th Jan I guess) in the web-world and earning handsomely. Yes you have every right to spend or save as per your priorities but as for I am myself concerned, I am unable to save a single paisa because I have too many responsibilities toward the people whom I support in my own home, the charity/old-age homes. I spend every single Rupee that I earn from my online work. :) I have a few other sources for saving purpose.
I took self retirement from my regular job way back in 2009 but by the time I did that, I saved enough to spend my life normally but I love to remain active therefore I am still involved in many activities that make extra money for me. For me saving part for future is no more a priority.

Saving money for future is necessary but fulfill our happiness is also important. I spend little amount of money to fulfill my requirement. I am doing data entry job. I got 10 k every month. Still I am a student. I save half money for my future.

Money is primarily for expenditure and not savings. But we need to saye for emergencies and old age. Also at certain stage of life, your expenses exceed current income. This needs savings. It is good idea to save 10% to 30% of current income. The saving channels should be in order of - (1) Mediclaim policy (2) accident insurance (3) Life insurance cover preferably term insurance policy covering likely need on death of the earning member

Hm... I like to save money.. But after saving enough, I love to spend them for my liking stuffs. But one certain amount I keep in safe so that it can be handy in emergency situation. So all extra savings goes for my liking and now on other things you know.

How much should you save is totally different from person to person. What is right for you might not be good for me. But generally if you can save 30% of your income, that will be enough. My thinking is enjoy your life and don't wait for the last moment.

Keeping future spends in mind, you should start saving a little frequently. Not just saving, you need to invest for better returns.

I used to spend more than half of my pay on shopping...now they are no longer in use..clothes are mostly donated..shoes given away. Only when I quit my job to look after my baby..did I realize that I was wasting money on useless pursuits. Anyway after quitting I have realized that with one income you need to judiciously spend and buy things that are absolutely necessary. Haven't earned anything from my online activities yet..but there is a ray of hope to get my payment soon ..from various sites and of course Boddunan. We should save more than half of our income and spend the rest depending on our priorities.
