Dictionary is a very important tool if you want to become a successful write. I was once advised by a very senior person who retired from the field of publication, now working on several language development projects, to buy a new edition of a dictionary every year. This will ensure that I will have a recently updated dictionary. Since English is one of the most evolving languages in the world, there are a lot of words form different languages that are being accepted and added in the dictionary, new terms are being coined in daily, especially since SMS and techno talk has become the norm of the day.
How it will help you? It will add to your vocabulary, will enrich your word power and you can enrich your writing skills further by not restricting yourself to just few known and commonly used words. So all in all, a dictionary is a must!

Though internet allows us to refer words instantly and they get updated there faster, I suggest there's no need to go to the print version every time. Just last month I purchased Oxford Thesaurus. And before that Chambers and Longman.

I would think it is very important. It does always help to use words which are not frequently spoken or written and the interest that it generates in the readers to understand what it means.
Dictionary is truly important not only as a writer but also as a layman. It not only help us to know about the meaning of a particular word, but also its synonyms and its various forms. It is the bible of improving your vocabulary.
