Jeev jeevasya bhojnam- This is vedic description of food chain. Food does not come from vacuum. Living things consisting of animals and plants are objects of food. There is food chain consisting of vegetation and meat. Man eats both- vegetarian and non vegetarian food. Ethically and physically, there is nothing wrong in eating meat of any animals as long as you feel it appropriate.
Selection of food items depends on individuals, communities and geographical conditions. What is appropriate for one may not be so for other. Hindus constitute a vast majority in India and they consider cow as mother. Hence cow slaughter is prohibited in many states. In the North East, vast majority is of tribal Christians and probably this is the reason why cow slaughter is not prohibited there. In many other states also, cow slaughter is not prohibited.
Nothing is good or bad as such. We may eat food as we feel appropriate. However, we should respect sentiments of others and abide by law as applicable in the region.
