The soil of the planet Mars contains iron oxide. When sun rays reflect from the planet mars, it emmits red colour. Hence the planet is also called red planet.

Oxygen from water, carbon di oxide from the atmosphere are combined with the minerals in the rocks and dust. This results in rust. and its color is red. This imparts Mars a red color.

Iron oxide to be exact. The iron oxide is simply a dust that covers the entire surface in varying depths. That dust is picked up by wind and carried into the atmosphere where it reflects the red part of the light spectrum and, viola, Mars is the Red Planet.

Mars, the red-planet is said to have emerged from the earth as a result of some massive explosion after the big-bang so, the mars has several rocks and minerals. Amongst all minerals, iron is the most prominent one. The atmosphere of Mars has some amount of carbondioxide hence, at high temperature the oxygen from the carbondioxide combine with the iron resulting to form iron oxide which mixes with soil of the mars and imparts red color to the planet's surface.
