Definitely the mindset of the people should be changed. And this Change should start from the Home itself. Additionally, the milieu in the home should be congenial that leads to positive attitude of the Child. The parents should not inject negative thoughts in the child. For example some parents do not allow their children to mix with Boys. This attitude in the parents is wrong and should not be encouraged. Over the years as the child grows up. these thoughts too grow in the children. This makes them look towards Co-Ed with suspicion and hatred.
@_Shampa, CO Ed education is even more essential when parents have single child...or else they get pampered and dont realize the importance of respecting the members of the opposite sex.

I agree! And the single kids need such interaction much more so because their friends at schools compensate for the absence of their own siblings to a great extent. And interacting with girls and boys of their age instil them with respect for the opposite sex adn also let them appreciate the gender differences in a natural way.

That's a pertinent point. A single child before 3 years of age will not bother much, about the necessity of such interaction.. After that, when father leaves for work and mother is busy with household chores, the child feels that loneliness. In such condition the child finds solace in the school amidst friend of its age.

True Kalyani, I know of a couple of boys who are the only child in the family, and coming from villages and small towns are pampered and not taught even to take care of themselves. In the beginning they are quite rude to girls , probably because they dont know how to deal with them, but they settle down after a while. The problem comes from the parents who resent this and their precious sons losing their importance as MEN..

Children can be moulded in a good and congenial surroundings. A family friend who works as a Munsiff in a nearby village requested me to keep his only son in my home for his middle school education as there were no good schools nearby. at that time. And my friend also warned me about the Boy's some behavioural qualities like throwing tantrums and fighting with the other kids in the neighborhood for everything. Of course, I accepted and took it as a challenge to change the Boy. At that time I had only one child. My son is habituated to get up in the early hours and study. Seeing this , my friend's son, gradually picked up and got adjusted to the existing surroundings. Rude behaviour and fights gradually disappeared.
After some time, I admitted in CO-Ed Municipal school. The boy got himself well adjusted. He has become a normal boy.

@ anil, most colleges are co ed now , even in villages because the number of schools are fewer and they need to cater to all the children in the vicinity they cannot afford to have a boys only or girls only schools..
Here in my city it is not true. Here co-education collages are 2 or three but for girls here 5 colleges. It is right that most of schools in rural area are co-ed. government have not source for separate school for boys and girls in rural area.
I feel it is more a protective instinct that is responsible for segregating the sexes. Inspite of all this we have one of the highest rate of rape cases in the world. It is probably because of this unnatural segregation that make men go wild and get into such perverted activities.

Very true Usha, the instinct of protecting girls from unwanted advances are responsible for segregation of sexes, but that has only worsened the problem. When segregation happens, many factors including social, educational, economical etc. contribute towards making the boys feel they special and far superior to the girls and are not taught on how to respect and deal with girls properly. This attitude and unhealthy contribution towards strengthening gender stereotypes has only worsened crimes against women, and thanks to exposure to digital and electronic pornography, now even underaged boys are greatly involved in such crimes. The solution is ideally co-education in which more focus is given to treating boys and girls equally in all aspects.

How long parents can protect the girls from unwanted advances by anti Social elements ? If this protection attitude of the parents were there, could we see an Indira Nooyi a Chanda Kochar or an Arundhat Bhattacharya ? It's high time for the parents to discard such age old beliefs about Girls.
One more innane response that makes little sense unless you are an idiot, the forum seems to be filled with these ...
