Why birds are able to return to their nests?

Birds travel daily far distances through unknown paths. Yet, when sun sets they are able to return to their nests. Is there any scientific explanation behind this? How are they able to memorize their paths and return, because we are never able to see a bird with lost path :cheer: ?

Nice information .

Oh no....Our likes and dislikes also... My previous puzzle decoded....

I once read the book, "Why men can't find things and women can't read maps?". It's sure, women can't memorize route maps easily and men can't find things placed in front of his eyes.
Similarly, birds may have special power to memorize the route they have traveled.
So, you were a zoology student. I assumed, you specialized in English literature

No I am a Zoology major, but I loved English equally!!

But i have never seen posting or answering zoology threads
Was it a bad dream of yours ? [/quote]

Probably they were question and answer types of threads which I dislike. Had they been discussion threads in which I can really discuss something, then I would have. For one thing I have never notice any such threads!

Why can't you add a new one, where we can add such simple information under one thread...just to increase and refresh our knowledge?
Bats cannot see in the day time so they will take rest in the morning and go for food in the night time.

How their mind works about directions? Any idea??? :woohoo:

I think they go by the noise as they have strong hearing power.
the birds have a special ability to sense earths magnetic field which they use it as there reference to find their nest
The scientific reason is that they always fly in groups and if a bird is flying alone then they always put some landmarks in their mind by which they can return to home.
This is a topic that biologists may better reply. The physical structure or anatomy of birds must be such as would enable them to understand directions.

Bats can not see in the dark, they have a very sophisticated inbuilt sonar system, they emit extremely high-pitched squeaks which bounce around and come back to them. If there is anything in the way, the echo picks it up and the bats can fly around without colliding into that object, maybe like a tree or a building etc. Similarly they find their preys to hunt.

Contrary to popular belief bats can see during the day time but they sleep during that time because they are nocturnal. The reason they evolved as nocturnal animals is because the animals, small rodents, insects etc are also all nocturnal, meaning active only at night.
That's great information Kalyani.

God has created many creatures having great mechanism and has designed many thing by seeing these. :)

True! Most of the scientific inventions were inspired by nature. Most modes of communication, aircrafts, submarines etc. were designed by studying how animals cope with their respective surroundings and their mobility. Nature has an answer to each and every problem, only we need to know where and how to look for them.
Many scientific studies have been done to find these migration mysteries of birds.
a) Some birds can sense the Earth,s magnetic field through some special chemicals present in their body and this helps them in orientation.
2)Some birds map their route with the help of their keen eyesight.
3) The birds which migrate in night mark their direction with positions of stars and constellations and the day birds use sun to navigate.

By "positions of stars and constellations"...really amazing......
Now I am confirmed, birds and animals are as intelligent as man.
Man can't use even 1% of their brains while other living beings use their brains more than 90%, sure
Yes humans cant use brain as they are dependents on technology but animals are not having any technology.
They take the help of sun. Its proven fact that they take the help of sun in coming back to their nest.

Yes they don't have the technology but they have the feelings by which they can sense what they have to do. :)
Of course yes, that is one proven fact that birds and animal use sun as their guide. Yes they find their way by sun

We human beings also consider Sun as reference as in village they try to eat food before sun sets and go to sleep.
It has been proved that they can come to nest with the help of Sun.
It means that all birds travel in morning, where the sun rises.Am i correct?
