    You all know the constitution in India started 2 years after we got Independence. It's been 62 years since we got Independence and 60 years since we got the constitution in our country but all we know is that there are some rights that safeguard us and we ask many things from the government...

    BUT


    There are things said by the constitution that should be followed by a citizen who resides here...Do we know those... It's called the Duties of Indian citizen

    The Constitution of India or the Constitution of the Republic of India came in effect on January 26, 1950 and is the longest written constitution of any independent nation in the world. It contains 395 articles and 12 schedules. It has a total of 117,369 words in its English language version.

    The Constitution of India clearly defines the responsibilities of Indian citizen, their Fundamental Rights and Duties. Part II of the Indian Constitution covers the clauses on Citizenship. Fundamental Rights are covered in Part III of the Constitution, while the Fundamental Duties are written in Article 51A. The Constitution, in a way, make the citizens aware of their core rights and responsibilities through the articles dealing with the fundamental Rights and Duties.

    we can do a lot of things to make INDIA a best to live(it is already better then many other).

    1.Each one teach one ,spread education it is the only medium to eradicate superstition,ignorance, communalism, hatred & vote bank politics.

    2.Try to use more & more indian made goods. This will help to lift up ur economy.

    3.Plant as much as trees u can to make environment of country good & to reduce pollution.

    4.Always obey ur duties of being a good citizen.

    5.Respect our rich heritage & culture & try ur level best to preserve it.

    6.Pay ur taxes at time properly.

    7.Don't use any illegal product.

    8.Last but not least be proud to be an indian.

    You have opened the issue up well. Let me add at the outset that our constittutiion heavily and rightly draws on the constitution of other countries of which you have made an appropriate mention. And unlike the British constitution which is convention based and not a voluminous like us. But then public opinion is very strong over there. The popular awareness is the safeguard. In India existence of fundamental rights was there before the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's government amended the Constitution to provide for certain duties. The rights are called fundamental simply because no government can deny these rights with which are naturally endowed with since our birth.That's why we at times call these civil rights as our birth rights too.

    Although everyone has not read constitution and law but even a lay man knows that we are a democratic country and every citizen has a right for equal treatment and equality before law and suffer no discrimination for caste, gender and religion etc. This is a matter of general knowledge and practice. Equally important is duty as a citizen to observe civic cleanliness, observe traffic and other rules and respect rights of fellow citizens.

    Thanks for starting such an important topic in today's scenario. This will help us know about our fundamental rights. I am not aware of all my rights.

    May I request you to also discuss the remedies, a citizen can have when deprived of any such rights.

    Article 12 to 35 of the Indian Constitution covers the Fundamental Rights of the citizen of the country. All these Fundamental Rights indicate that all the citizens are equally treated by the nation irrespective of caste, sex and creed. In this context, the basic Fundamental Rights are linked with

    * Equality in all respects (also in matters of public employment), prohibition of discrimination, abolition of untouchability;

    * The right to freedom, essentially in terms of freedom of speech;

    * The right against exploitation, essentially in terms of prohibition in human beings and forced labour and prohibition of employment of children in factories;

    * The right to freedom of religion in terms of freedom of conscience and free profession, practice and propogation of religion, freedom to manage religious affairs, freedom as to payment of taxes for promotion of any particular religion, freedom as to attendance at religious instruction of religious workshop in certain education institutions;

    * Cultural and educational rights essentially in terms of protection on interests of minorities;

    * Savings of certain laws providing for the acquisition of estates and also in terms of anti-national activities;

    * Rights to constitutional remedies like remedies for enforcement of rights, the power of Parliament to modify the rights.
