Even today in modern India we find some of these social evils. Dowry is still practiced. A person doing a "menial" job such as a janitor or a chauffeur is not treated as an equal by an engineer or a scientist. A person is considered educated if he spent X number of years in a school and a college and gained some Y degree. Education has become a means to find a higher paying job but not to make a refined person.
The situation has improved a lot since independence but there is still a long way to go. Today people from lower castes have access to education. They have equal legal rights. They travel and work along with the people of upper castes. Women have access to education and are coming up in all fields.
This should change in every way as there should be equality among people and among us-

WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens:
JUSTICE, social, economic and political;
LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship;
EQUALITY of status and of opportunity;
and to promote among them all
FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation;
IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this twenty-sixth day of November, 1949, do HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION.
Purpose of Having a Preamble:
The Preamble to our Constitution serves two purposes: -
A) It indicates the source from which the Constitution derives its authority;
B) It also states the objects, which the Constitution seeks to establish and promote.
The Preamble seeks to establish what Mahatma Gandhi described as The India of my Dreams, "…an India in which the poorest shall feel that it is their country in whose making they have an effective voice; …an India in which all communities shall leave I perfect harmony. There can be no room in such an India for the curse of untouchability or the curse of Intoxicating drinks and drugs. Woman will enjoy as the same rights as man."

Constitution of India is a dynamic outcome of coalesce of number of movements aspiring for various types of freedoms and rights. The colonial rule that supported the transfer of wealth from India into England fuelled Industrial Revolution.
This was by way of supply of raw materials and transforming India into a market for the finished Industrial products. This relationship was facilitated due to caste wise discrimination of People in terms of social humiliation, access to education, health and Land in various Princely States.
This situation was challenged by various movements and visionary leaderships of Gandhi, Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh. This is not to discount the sacrifices of countless masses that formed the lowest and strongest wheel of the transformative movement – Indian Freedom Struggle.

I am very disappointed with the level of participation that this thread has drawn so far but I appreciate your efforts to keep it alive. As I am a little preoccupied at the moment,I am not able to contribute as effectively as I wished. You have discussed the theoretical part quite well but its relevance could be highlighted in practical cases by citing what happened when emergency was clamped in this country way back in 1975. I would be back with my views from time to time.Please keep it alive.

Human beings are rational beings. They by virtue of being humans possess certain basic and inalienable rights which are known as Human Rights. Since these rights are available to them by virtue of being humans, as such they come into existence at the time of their birth. The Constitution of India as adopted in 1950 provides certain rights to its citizens known as the Fundamental Rights(Part-3,article 14-35). These rights are similar to those rights which are provided in Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the rights provided in International covenant on civil and political rights and international rights on social, economic and cultural rights.
