सामान्यजन को शास्त्रीय संगीत से परिचित करने वालें भीमसेन जोशी एकमेव शास्त्रीय गायक है | आज घर घर में शास्त्रीय संगीत को प्रतिष्ठा तो दिही पर सामान्य से असामान्य इन्सान को भी उन्होंने अपने संगीत कि जादूसे भावविभोर कर दिया | शास्त्रीय संगीत का जिसे ज्ञान नही उन श्रोताओंको भी खीचं लानेकी ताकद उनमें थी | भारी और धीरगंभीर आवाज , आरंभ में ही श्रोतओंको मोहित करने कि कुशलता , और आगे आगे मैफिल पर चढ़ने वाला रंग यह उनकी विशेषता थी | जब वह अभंग गाते थे तो गरीब सेभी गरीब श्रोताको मानो भगवान का साक्षात्कार होता था | वे किराना घरानेके गायक थे ,और उनके संगीत में किरानाघरानेकी झलक नजर आती थी |

उनके लिए शास्त्रीय संगीत परब्रम्ह था | पर फिर भी उन्होंने संगीत के अन्य प्रकार भी अपनाये | उनोहें अभंग , सिनेमा संगीत , भक्तिगीत और तो और '' मिले सुर मेरा तुम्हारा " जैसे विग्यापनोंमें भी अपना आवाज देकर उसे भी लोकप्रिय बनाया |

पंडित भीमसेन जोशी का जन्म ४ फरवरी ,१९२२ में कर्नाटक के हुबली के पास गदग गाव में हुआ | उनके माताजी का नाम रमाबाई और पिताजी का नाम गुरुराज था | गुरुराज ज्योतिषी और संस्कृत के पंडित थे |

पंडितजी का कलाप्रेम बचपन में ही सामने आया | बचपन से ही ताशे ढोल या अन्य सुर उनके कनोंमें पड़ते तो उनकी जिज्ञासा जागृत होती और उसे जाननेकी अनिवार इच्छा उनके मन में होती थी | उस समय अब्दुल करीम खाँ कि गायकी बहुत प्रसिद्ध थी | उनके रेकार्ड्स पंडित जी बहुत बार सुनते थे | इस गान साधना के लिए उन्होंने घर से पलायन किया और मुंबई आगये | अच्छे गुरु कि उनको तलाश थी | साल १९३५ -३६ में उन्होंने सवाई गंधर्व का शिष्यत्व स्वीकार किया | इस काल में पंडित जी ने अपने गायकिको आकर दिया | उनकी कड़ी महेनत को देखकर सवाई गंधर्व जी ने उनके गुरुत्व का स्वीकार किया |

उनके संगीत प्रवास कि शुरुवात १९४६ में पुणे में पहली स्वतंत्र महफ़िल से होगई | उसके बाद उन्होंने मुड़के नही देखा | ललत, तोड़ी , कल्यान , मुलतानी , दरबारी , शुद्धकल्यान , मल्हार, पुरिया , कलाश्री , मारुबिहाग ,कोमल रिषभ आसावरी , छायानट जैसे किरानाघरानेके स्वरोंकी बरसात होती रही | इन स्वरोंको गाना इस स्वरभास्कर को ही शोभांकित था |

महफिले सजाती रही | इसी दौरान पंडित जी को अनेकों पुरस्करोंसे सम्मानित किया गया | शब्द और शब्दोंके पार उनका अर्थ नाद्ब्रम्ह से गानेवाले इस अनोखे कलाकार कि गायकी हर जनसामान्य के ह्रदय में समा गई है |

भारत सरकार कि तरफ से दिया जानेवाला सर्वोतम पुरस्कार '' भारतरत्न '' से पंडित भीमसेन जोशी जी को नवासा गया|
