We use electrical signals for the transfer of information from one place to another. For long distance communication we use radio waves. But one of the disadvantages of these communication methods is that there will be unwanted noise present in the received signal of these transmitters and also the speed of transmission. Also the intercontinental communication which covers 1000 of Kilometers is not possible via Electrical transfer of data. In order to make this possible we have adopted a new medium of communication. This is called the Optical fiber communication.
One of the main advantage of using light as a medium of transfer of information is that the interference due to noise will not be present and the speed of light can be used for faster data transfer. Optical fibers are glass rods with a low density plastic wrapping or covering. The basic principle of optical fiber communication is the multiple reflection or refraction.
Terms related to optical fibre communication
Refraction: - The bending of light wave when entering from one medium to another depends on their refractive index. This bending is called refraction. When light enter from denser to lighter medium light moves away from normal. When light enter to denser medium from lighter medium light moves towards the normal.
Reflection: - The coming back of light when entering from one medium to another is called reflection. If all the rays of light are reflected back then it is called total internal reflection. If some of the rays are reflected then it is called partial reflection.
Total internal reflection: - The complete reflection of incident light is called total internal reflection. Total internal reflection takes place only when light enters from denser to lighter medium.
Critical angle: - The angle at which the angle of refraction become 90 degree.
According to Snell’s law the light entering from denser medium to lighter medium with angle of incidence equal to critical angle, light will undergo total internal reflection. This is the technique used in optical fibre communication, the material used in optical fibre is arranged such that the light entering in to the fibre undergoes multiple internal reflections and the light entering at one end will reach the other end. The below figure show the constructional features of optical fibre cable.
It consists of a core which is made up of denser medium and a cladding surrounding it which has lighter medium. Light which is to be transmitted is allowed to fall into the core. Light enters from core to cladding undergoes multiple internal reflection and light travels through the cable. The cable should be arranged such that the angle of incidence of light must be at critical angle or larger than critical angle. There should not be any large bends in the cable which makes the angle of incidents lesser than critical angle. Otherwise total internal refection will not take place.
Advantages of optical fibre communication
The interference of other signals like noise will be absent in optical fibre communication. Maximum accuracy can be attained for data transmission. Large distance transmission is possible. Power required for transmission is less when compared to other channels of communication.
But the disadvantage of using optical fibre is that the cost of setup of the devices is large. Also the repairing cost is large.
Hard disk is the important storage device of computer. It cannot be replaced by a semiconductor storage device like a semiconductor memory such as the pen drives that we use today. This is because the dynamic locating of memory on semiconductor is not possible. Sequential memory allocation is the only possible way to access semiconductor memory. But in case of a magnetical storage device like hard disk it can be accessed dynamically by moving the read/write head to the corresponding position. But one problem seriously affecting the magnetical storage devices is that the data storing capacity cannot be made so large. Researches for developing larger sized hard disks are going on different multinational industries like IBM, Motorola etc.
I am going to tell about one outcome of these researches made by IBM. This new technology can be named as Pixel Dust. In the last five years hard disk capacity has been doubled by the use of double layered disks. But according to the IBM this new technology will push back that limit. IBM is planning to revolutionize the hard disk production by the use of this new technology. For users this new data density will give a transition of home entertainment from analog to the digital interactive formats.
When telling about the new technology it is a modification of the hard disk material that we use for data storage. The new material called the ruthenium is used for this purpose. This metal is precious like platinum. This metal will be sandwiched between two magnetic layers. This new material is expected to store data of about one million bits per square inch of the disk. That means 100 GB of data can be stored in one square inch. Current hard disk is capable of storing about 20 GB of data per square inch. This new method will quadruple the storage capacity.
Technically this anti ferromagnetically coupled (AFC) or pixel dust technology will be powering the hard disk in the future. The advantage of using this type of hard disks is that it can handle large amount of data with less power. As the size of drives increases the problem affecting the data read and write is that it can corrupt the data present in the drives. In order to avoid this Super paramagnetic (SPE) effect has to be used. Also these will enables faster data read and write in the hard disks. Another advantage of using this AFC media for data storage is that the life AFC media is more than current hard disks that we use now.
Our communication field has developed to an extent that we can access Internet on our mobile phones. But the technology used for this is GPRS/EDGE. The new technology called the third generation or 3G will be providing faster Internet when compared to GPRS or EDGE. 3G technology came into existence in the near days. The next footstep of communication field will be to provide Wi-Fi access for mobile phones. For this the mobile towers is to be provided with the necessary devices for Wi-Fi communication and also to use it the mobile phones should have Wi-Fi access and necessary protocols.
Wi-Fi has different modes of communication based on their speed and range of propagation. New methods are developing by the researchers for getting larger distance of communication for the Wi-Fi. In this article I am going to mention about one such footstep. This new technology is called Wi-max or 4G. According to IEEE this new service is named as 802.16. This technology will be providing wireless access of Internet in the Metropolitan cities in the future. This technology can provide a range of 50 km for fixed stations and 15 km for mobile terminals.
In the future Wi-max will find application in almost many of the fields like traffic, medical, weather and many more.
Smart Grid in power distribution
With smarter ways of power consumption we can avoid the energy wastage and unwanted use. By the use of Wi-max technology the rapid analysis and checking of power usage helps to track the household and industrial consumption of electricity and we can adjust the energy production to meet the necessity. Also if there is unwanted wastage of energy the consumer can be alerted to stop that.
TV Broadcasts
In the future the TV broadcasting towers will be replaced by the Wi-max transmission methods. With this new technology live broadcast of TV programmes will be possible in a faster rate than that we use now. A simple device attached to the camera is the only device needed for this technology. It will link the camera to the broadcasting antenna and the broadcasting satellite. Transmission takes place in real time and can be accessed and processed in the studio with satellite receivers and dishes.
Video tracking
This technology will provide video tracking of the streets and localities and will help to monitor the situations of important places. Moreover that it can be used for security purposes and it can be accessed remotely by the officials. Efficient traffic monitoring and control is possible with this technology. The density of traffic can be monitored and signals can be automated based on this.
Safer driving using Wi-max
The transportation system will become intelligent upon the implementation of Wi-max. The driver will be alerted about the traffic situations and blocks in their route and they can decide their path of journey. The advantage of Wi-max is that since it is wireless there is no difficulty for the driver to access it. He can operate his device from anywhere there is a Wi-max hotspot like in W-Fi.
