It was one of the most liberal colleges with youngsters going round in the most mod dresses, hair cuts and mini skirts. But now they are imposing a dress code and also a name tag which the students are supposed to carry round their neck all the time. This has not gone down well with the students who feel that their freedom is being unnecessarily curtailed...

Exactly! each person including a woman has her basic rights of deciding such things for herself!
The problem with our society is its double standards.Anything done in the name of tradition is accepted like for example if you see the old temple carvings the dresses worn as depicted there sis bolder than anything you see. Similarly you see women wearing sarees below their navel and skimpy blouses which show much more of the body than western dresses do, but that is ok as far as the population. Is concerned ..so one has to use ones wisdom and do what is best for oneself since safety is important much more than public opinion..I personally feel that ladies have to be cautious when there are deviant and deranged men out there in the open..
It happens only in India, but fact is that people in India are still not mature and are never taught to respect others' personal choices especially where dressing is concerned. While most men still prefer their women be covered from top to toe are the ones who will stare shamelessly at a woman who is dress in jeans, they even stare at quite young girls, forgetting their own daughters might be getting stared at in a similar manner. It is all about hypocrisy and double standards everywhere.
I agree. I also find that saree is more revealing than Pant or Jeans. But there is another aspect. What we are used to see is not so noticed as some thing new. Saree is more usual and acceptable dress and so a woman in such dress is not so noticable as one in western dress to which people may not be used to.
True, the way a saree is worn is actually so much sensual than any other dress in the world and yet conservative people do not object to it. Actually it is all about being tolerant towards the women that matters, as long as women are seen as being submissive and mere objects of fulfilling the carnal desires, no matter what a woman wears will always be questioned.
It is the attitude that really matters and not the way a woman is dressed. Some people have already made up their minds about the character and other aspects of a girl who dresses in mod clothes and probably goes to a pub whereas a man doing the same things is never questioned or pre judged, which goes to show that the Indian population is still bound in age old feudal thinking that always looked own on women..
Exactly! Again the basic question that arises here is , are men to dictate what women should wear and not wear? and just because men are still not mature and developed emotionally to be able to keep their desires in check, women should always suffer? It is all about double standards again at work!
We need a decorum in all walks of life including dress. But this is for men and as well as women. I also agree that men do not have exclusive right to prescribe what a woman should wear or not. This right is irrespective of gender. A dress code needs be prescribed for men and women both and women should also be involved in every decision making process.
True! But when a dress code is prescribed, it should be made on the premises of maintaining decorum and uniformity that does not highlight economic status or lifestyle preferences. But what happens mostly is that issues of women's modesty etc are highlighted when such codes are implemented, that is why they raise totally different issues altogether!
Exactly ! Why should modesty be only the prerogative for women?thats where all the problem comes in because the society dictates and also suggests that women need to dress in a certain manner to please men who basically cannot control their basic instincts and may go wild at the slightest provocation
You have put it very well. In any case a person dresses as he likes and desires. so why cannot this fact be accepted that women also like to dress up for themselves and not for others.
I am for equality of gender and agree that men have no exclusive right to decide dress code for men and women. But is is also a fact that we should eat as we like but wear as others like. This is well known Punjabi proverb. This is not gender specific.

Yes, to an extent I agree with you. But sadly, when the issue of dressing by women come up, it is made into a matter of sexuality and everyone trying to suppress a woman's preferences under the guise of protecting her modesty and integrity. These are the concepts that should NOT be linked with a woman's dress and character, that is what irks me. A girl wearing jeans and Tees is seen as morally loose which she may not be. Those kinds of stereotypes are absurd in these times.

I agree. In fact, I like to see girls in Jeans rather than in sari. There is no morality involved. These days most girls and even married young women wear jeans. This is smarter and easier than sari. Sari is dangerous while sitting in pillion seat of a bike. Hence sari guard is provided with motor cycles.

I wish they find a 'guard' for jeans wearing people too and it should not be a gender specific one.

By all means, one can go for shopping in swimming trunks. But let them be prepared for the consequences.

Anil, any woman with some comon sense would wear a swim suit only while swimming, by the way do men wear swimming trunks while shopping, so how can you make such a ridiculous statement about women?

I am sad to say that this statement of yours is clearly stinking of typical chauvinistic and authoritative attitude, something which cannot be tolerated under any circumstances! Be thankful this is an online forum! And I am warning you not just as a moderator but as a woman that I do not want to see such ridiculous comments. You know humour is welcome any time but not at the cost of sounding cheap or biased!

Do you really mean 'shopping' or 'shipping'. I think that every one- man and woman- wears a proper dress as suitable for an occasion. Fancy dress show is another matter. Why do you talk about woman only. No woman goes in awkward dress. But some times you see men moving absolutely nude or wearing 'Langot' only that covers only front genitals. Such men are of course lunatic. A few months back, one woman also would move in Sanjay Place area without any clothes. she was, of course, lunatic. she is no more seen. But such cases are rare.

I witnessed a similar case. The woman was naked. She’s not walking on the roads. She sat in the verandah of her house, which she calls as her Ashram. People, majority of them woman were jostling to have a darshan of her. She announced through a series of pamphlets that she was endowed with divine qualities and she can grant any boons to her devotees. The very next day, she was arrested by a women police force. Afterwards, I came to know that she was not insane, but it was a smart ploy to attract the gullible.

I think Anil did not mean SHOPPING but boating which he mentioned in form of SHIPPING. I know Anil can never make an offending comment against women anyway. I think he deserves benefit of doubt in this case.

One need not be obvious and loud, even subtle refernce is bad enough since the issue is sensitive to women who are anyway treated like chattel to be passed on from hand to hand in this country ! On the one hand they call them devi and on the other hand they are supposed to toe the line laid down by every tom dick and harry...

But all males are not like you.
We started with dress code started by Christian College Chennai and reached too far from basic topic. I think we all should discuss whether or not the prestigious college did right or people including women should obey the rule. We may have differences of opinion on any subject but I do not see any member will go as far as insulting women in this forum. It is a small family therefore words selected to use should be carefully. Maybe lack of knowledge may play its role but that is common, and THE SLIP IS SHOWING IN THIS CASE. (I HOPE OUR KNOWLEDGEABLE MEMBERS KNOW WHAT I MEAN)
