Friends, it is shocking that to meet the supply in metro cities, and for more benefits the Indian farmers are injecting vegetables with oxytocin. The vegetable which normally take 10 -15 days to get prepared for using, farmers inject them with oxytocin on the very first day and it get prepared in 2-3 days. Such vegetable produced is not good for health. Our government should be strict on this and the faulty farmers should be punished.

Which is why, people take care of themselves in their own way without looking for help from the law enforcing authorities. After all it's our life.
In fact, I saw that now retail shoppe such as big bazzar and Dmart are selling fruit and Veggie spray wash to clean veggies. Yet another trap of consumerism. First give more than required amount of pesticide, inject oxytocin to make veggies and fruit look bigger and ripen fruits and veggies before time and then flood the market with costly fruits and veggie spray wash!

Not just oxytocin, but the veggies and fruits such as carrots, spinach, melons etc. are injected with colour and sugar syrup to make them appear brighter and taste sweeter! So instead of eating all-natural veggies, we are still eating a load of chemicals daily!

True. Mixing colors and other additives is being done openly. I have seen it. This is a common scene in our vegetable markets.

Now eating even a slice of apple will land you in a hospital. Take the charge. Don't wait for somebody for controlling the conditions if you want to live an ailment free life.
People who are money minded making these kind of vegetable poison to mankind. By using carbide several persons are making fruits before it turns to its stage naturally. They can raise the vegetable price instead of injecting the vegetables and fruits. People are nowadays ready to buy organic items but how much quality that item contain is ?. Live and let live others happily in the society.

Organic stuff is good in all respects but they are expensive with limited availability.
Selling poison is not just limited to fruits and veggies..even ice-cream and sweets are sweetened beyond limits these days. No wonder more and more people are falling prey to diabetes. Even big brands of ice-cream are so sweet that even normal people cannot consume it. Agreed that a sedentary life leads to various diseases, but other factors like too many overly sweet edible items are also to be blamed.
Organic stuff is good and prices are high but the quality also a drawback. Several stores nowadays selling organic items with complete packing. How to know whether they are organic or regular item. There is no way to find the originality of the item. Every pocket nowadays printed with the word organic items. I think this also like a trend to raise the product price indirectly by consuming those items which are not genuine. In some departmental stores only selling the original product.
In these dreary conditions, it seems only way out is to grow our own vegetables . Vegetables required for a small family can be grown in pots also. Even in apartments vegetables can be grown in pots.

Time and space is limited even for a small family, modern apartments have hardly any space to accommodate furniture and other paraphernalia....growing vegetables is a distant dream.

Mousumi, i have seen Adivasis in their Matchbox sized houses growing vegetable in pots. Of course they don't have unnecessary household items like furniture. We have to do a bit of readjustment in the home or eliminate some objects and make way for potted low hanging pots for vegetable growing.
The fruits and vegetables are poisoned at a large extent and some of the foreign countries which imported fruits and vegetables from India now has banned to import. Now they are seeking other countries.

Very true...where there is a will there is a way. People who are willing to do a little hard work and show patience can grow veggies in containers in windows! On the contrary I have seen huge bungalows with lots of garden space wasting it all by covering it up with concrete or tiles just because they don't 'Like' the trash generated by soil and fallen leaves!

I agree with you Kalyani. I live in apartments. Fortunately, my apartment is spacious. We are less in number. I utilized this aspect and started growing Potted vegetables. Though not exotic varieties, I could grow some ordinary vegetables successfully. But i'm sure from this starting, i gradually go for exotic varieties in the days to come.

And I think gardening is even more than just a hobby. I feel it is a way of learning new things and being able to commune with nature, which is quite crucial in today's hectic lives! And nothing more is satisfying than plucking your own tomatoes and relishing it with joy! :cheer:

Gardening is not just a hobby, its an exercise too. The joy of growing your own vegetables and enjoying them is altogether a different proposition which is beyond words.

Kalyani little bit I know about you through your blogs tell me that you enjoy gardening, so it is very well possible for a person like you. : )

@ Rambabu: We have a spacious balcony, and we have plants too..but growing veggies is not my cup of tea and am sure not many can do this. It requires a lot of effort, patience and art too.
