We Indians are blindly following the western culture and giving more importance to English language. We have seen the examples of Chin and Japan that they developed faster while using their own language and culture. Is it necessary for India to use a foreign language and follow their culture.
Who says that we do not work and talk in our languages. The states in India have regional languages including Hindi as official languages. The govt. of U.P. and local courts work in Hindi. similarly in Punjab and Tamilnadu where govts work in local regional languages. Most people speak in mother tongue only. English is used mainly as a link language and also for official work of center. It is no use speaking the oft repeated stereotyped meaningless material. Also it makes no sense to compare multi lingual India with single language small countries. People in India celebrate more local festivals than number of days in the year. They even die in stampedes while gathering in temples of deities- all Hindu local. I don't understand why you make the totally false statement that we don't follow our culture and tradition. People see more Hindi movies than English. How do you say that we use foreign language. The circulation of regional newspapers including Hindi far outnumbers the English dailies. What makes you say that we don't use our language or use foreign language.
Incidentally, a language that we adopt and use is ours. Now English is as much ours as that of British. Language is for our facility and progress. We have many noted authors in English including Sarojani Naidu, Rajgopalachari, Mulk Raj Anand. This goes to show that English is no more foreign and this is ours.
Can you get a good jab if you know only Hindi? without English there are very less jobs left in India. and about schools , almost all Hindi schools closed in metro cities and small towns. English medium schools grown at a large extent in towns and metro cities. Now India want to grow only with the help of English.
You have to be realistic about your own nation and its status. While speaking about Japan and China they have a great work culture , commitment and dedication which is totally lacking in us and a single language although china has many dialects but having the same base unlike us , added to which we have so many languages and it makes it difficult to correspond all through the country. This is precisely why English has become our link language which has been serving the purpose very well...Adapting culture and practices is left to the individual !

Of course, English is important for job opportunites at wider scale/ This cannot be wished away. Japanese aand Chinese also have to attain proficiency in English if they seek jobs abroad. If you wish equal opportunity for one knowing only Bhojpuri or Tamil and another knowing English besides regional language, this is mere wishful thinking. You can grow with realisation of ground reality.
I do not wish to comment about culture part, but we cannot stop using English, since we already know that it is an international language connecting people all over. What you are referring to as a foreign language has become a part of our identity and is also one of the official languages of our country. English language no has an Indian variety called English (India). Words such as pucca/pukka, jungle etc are part of any English dictionary. So, in my opinion it is no longer a foreign language.
We are using Indian English so it is very much native, and as far as development concerned it depends upon various other variables, despite negative variables we are progressing, as far as China is concerned we are not seeing poor of theirs as there must be poverty there but due to glowing light of development all such negative aspects stays back burner.
For the development of China and India, Using their own language is not the sole reason. They clubbed it with an ethical work culture, Commitment and sincerity. If by using Hindi, India becomes Developed, It would have become a Developed country long long ago.

Personally I don't consider English as an alien language..it has become one of our own. But as far as development is concerned, as you have mentioned there are other things which needs to be taken into consideration. The talent and merit of scholars in India are not adequately rewarded, hence such people go to foreign countries to showcase their talent, this is one reason why India is still lagging behind.

English has indeed become almost a mother tongue of many Indians. It is regularly observed how parents instruct their tiny tots in English so that they can pick it up fast. There is merit in the argument that because of English making deep inroads in the elite they are to a significant extant cut off from the real India. That is why it is often said that their are two India's -India and Bharat. A home grown national language has more binding power but in a multi language country like ours we seem to be united in accepting a foreign language as thec most important language -of commerce and employment. Development will take place irrespective of which language is used.

English is considered as the lingua franca of the world and in a multi-lingual country like ours we have to have a common language. When merely talking against a particular sect gives rise to violence and riot, practically speaking we cannot use any other language other than English.
we have not adapted English, but English is imposed on us. If our government had created jobs in our own language then English would be not so much necessary as it is today. only those who want to go other countries may have to learn English only for the purpose of communication. But over government has taken no care and as the result people have to depend on other country's language. Today English medium schools are growing on a faster rate while schools in our own languages are going down and down.

India is such a big country that various states like U.P., Bihar are like European countries. So if you wish to get job knowing only mother tongue, there is ample scope in your state. But if you wish to fid opportunities in othr states, you must learn either the language of that state or English. Thus a Punjabi can get job in Punjab only with his mother tongue. If he wishes to get job in Tamilnadu, he will have to learn Tamil if not English. Punjabi is more foreign than english in Tamilnadu. When you repeatedly talk of 'foreign', consider this aspect. If you feel english is imposed, there is greater opposition to imposition of Hindi on the entire country. Hindi chauvanism is not acceptable.

@Gulshan Kumar Ajmani: I agree to what you have said over here. // If you feel english is imposed, there is greater opposition to imposition of Hindi on the entire country. // I can't agree more. People all over are more open to accepting English rather than any other language because that would mean learning not just your mother tongue and English but about 20-27 languages which is not humanly possible.

It is often cited that abroad they work in their own languages. true but so many of them have a single language like Spain,France, England etc, Now when Europeans have to interact they talk in English as a link language. In fact English is not very well understood in most of the European countries. But in India which language will become the national language is still a problem.

Probably we should have a poll to know and get the result...as in which language should become our national language. Though English and Hindi are the official languages of the Govt. of India.
It is a well known fact that the Japanese and the Chinese are now learning English like never before. Those who still beat their chests from the Hindi belt that English is a foreign language, need to understand that in every single country of Europe, their own Hindi wallahs from the English medium schools and the IITs and the IIMs, are studying their courses -- all higher education courses in, well, note this very important point, my dear Hindi wallahs, ENGLISH. Language, whether it is Hindi, or Tamil or any other language, is a means of understanding. Our Sardarjis from Punjab, for example, have settled down in Chennai, for decades, and speak Tamil so well. The daily wage labor from the Hindi belt, who do all sorts of civil Engineering work, including working for the Chennai Metro, in Chennai, have started speaking Tamil.
It is ridiculous to argue that speaking in English, transports us to a different culture. In fact, most of what goes on in Facebook, happens in various Indian languages as well. Hindi is the ideal link language, to be spoken throughout the country. It already has this status, even in Chennai. However, the Hindi wallahs also need to know that English is as important as Hindi.
Language and culture go together. Only if the people of another region understand local cultures and mix with the local people, and get to appreciate the good things of such cultures, can be make progress as a nation. For instance, many North Indians, enjoy Pongal, as a festival. They visit the houses of all friends, from various parts of India.
Language and culture can never be confused. Language is a means of communication, of better understanding, of mature outlook in life. There is no inferior or superior language. And in no way can people like Mr Limba think of advocating Hindi as the only language. This is absurd, to say the least.

Language and culture are two-sides of the same coin. I agree with what you have summed up but language is a tool to communication which in every sense has an influence on culture. Though both are separate but still go hand in hand.

When we have opened up our country to globalisation, it is but natural that we adapt a language that is most practical and spoken by the majority of people world wide...By the way, which language can be adapted in India and how does it help to have several languages being used at the same time since each state has its own language ! Adapting English does not mean that people have stopped speaking in their own mother tongues nor have schools given up teaching in that language..
English is an international language and it is used predominantly for international commerce and business. In today's era of globalization we need a common language with which we can communicate with each other and thus English has rapidly grown its importance.
