Yes this is true that it increases the self ability but how many students do it itself. Parents do this as they have no time due to pressure of homework.
The main objective of giving projects is to help the children learn by doing themselves. No doubt some of the children take help from their parents or tutors etc. But even if they do not do the whole project themselves, it actually make them more responsible for their self learning as compared to learning by simply listening to the lectures of the teachers.

also, it's the duty of parents to make them do their home works, just provide guidance

When students are doing project works they will gain more knowledge than reading, while they were doing they were the only person to search for that given project.
but now readymade cds are available everywhere

Small kids cannot do their home work on their own of course they need their parents help to complete it. :(

Whether it is homework or project work, ideally the teachers should give work which could be done by the students themselves. That way the students would enjoy doing the work . But some teachers really make it a burden for the students by giving works which the students cannot complete themselves without seeking guidance.

But some times such projects are given which is impossible for them .

Now a days in schools teachers are giving lots of projects to thier students. What are the uses of project works... :)
It is very essential to make them independent thinkers and also give vent to their creative imagination.Theory and book knowledge is very limited in building up a students capability as far as his dealings with the outside world is concerned. Education is not complete with practical knowledge and work based on that which is what project is all about..
Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are two steps ahead !!!
