Making the student realize his niche and freedom to chase his niche are important. For this, I feel the parents also should take an active role. If there is a genuine councilling, of course, there is nothing like it.
Both parents and students need counselling in some cases. It will be helpful for both of them to take a better decision in terms of chidren career. :)

If the councilling is genuine and not a commercial profit making organization, yes it helps. There were days when schools used to take up councilling through constant interaction between the parents and the teachers.
It must be genuine. Then only it will be a effective session for both.

Many of the present councilling institutions are not reliable because they are commercialized.

If parents and children have clear and healthy communications among themselves, there is no need of any professional counselors. A student knows his/her strengths and weakness and parents who are involved in their academics from day one are equally aware of the plus points and minus points..taking such points one can decide what needs to be taken up for further studies and make a career out of the same.

“A mistake is a crash-course in learning” – Billy Anderson

No councilor can gauge a child's mind than parents. Provided the parents keep their eyes and ears open and observe the child keenly. Lacking this quality in parents is nothing short of Bad parenting.
Yes sir. so true. If parents listen to child's need and act according to that there is no need for councelling.

There is another system constant interaction between the teachers and parents. This system is more ideal than councilling. Since both the parents and teachers know well about the strengths and weaknesses of the child.
Yes. It will be more effective and bring more positive changes in the development of a child in academics as well as behaviour.
