Looking at the overall scenario of the country, I am lost in finding answers to so many questions centering around morality of this nation. There are scores of cases of swindle, rape and crimes of a wide variety involving teenagers and we have to study this problem with greater depth. In the formative years person who used to influence us most are our parents and then our teachers. Today I am confronted with this question: Are present day teachers are even worth comparing with the ones who taught us?

For teachers teaching is formality. In government school teacher went to schools only to mark attendance and assures salary. Government is also responsible for it. Opening schools posting of teacher all are on political basis. Teacher are teaching what they asked to teach.

I partly agree with your views chinmoy...because I personally feel that home atmosphere has a lot to do with the shaping of a childs mind. Unless the parents monitor the child on a day today basis it is not possible to do anything much at school.Teachers teach a class full of 50- 60 students and there is no time to get to kow them individually . Those who are bright or naughty or poor in studies would be given extra attention, no doubt ! However according many psycho analysts it is the shy retiring type that is likely to commit rape when the circumstances and company is favorable. They easily get carried away and may end up committing a crime just to show that they are capable of doing it.. after the first successfull attempt I guess it becomes a habit !

Teachers are to blame but so are the parents and the conditions that prevail outside our homes. Teachers are burdened with responsibility of teaching more than 60 students in each class, something that is a herculean task and the number of students grow as the educational institutions are all being taken over by politicians who know nothing about education but are only interested in minting money. Also teachers are saddled with other tasks that have nothing to do with teaching, how can teachers find time to teach children? Also those teachers who do have time only to teach are only interested in keeping their merits higher so they carve a niche for themselves in the booming sector of private coaching. The focus is only on enabling students to somehow score higher and higher, some resorting to unfair practices, so the students too learn that only the result matters and not the means. There is no moral fabric anywhere in this. As regards parents, they are entangled in a vicious circle of their own careers, ambitions and making their children follow the same by attending various coaching and development programmes. which hardly do anything much for a child except for him to grow more and more insensitive to anyone other than him alone!

I do agree that teachers too are a part of our decadent system otherwise how do you explain a few teachers of the school who do not do their duties in the classes but tempt students to come to their coaching centers and the shocking part of it, is these teachers charge the entire fees of the year at one go so that students never succeed in escaping payments. Horrendous! A relationship which is supposed to be pure, is founded on distrust and the very teacher is leading in this moral bankruptcy!!

You know when I hear many people still boasting about the culture of country and majority of these people falling over themselves to celebrate Guru Poornima, I cannot help but laugh. We had a very excellent and the best education system that taught students not just bookish knowledge but wisdom, their real duties towards others, their country etc. now which has been reduced to dust. I also blame the reservation system for this downgradation. When a person who is capable of a job or a seat on his merits, when another candidate gets that no matter how undeserving it is, that is the time when everything starts breaking apart.

There is very wide gap between what is taught and what is practised. There may be lesson on honesty in Moral Science Text book but in practice, all sections of society indulge in immoral activities. Children learn more from environment than schools. The teachers also indulge in corrupt practice like encouraging private tuition, encouraging mass copying on contract. There is definitely erosion in standards of teaching. Teachers in past were sincere and did not indulge in private tuition as at present.

Agreed ! In fact if the governement and the educational authorities have any sebnse they should totally ban all the coaching classes which are legal and look almost like colleges ...It is partly because of the lifestyle - both the parents working with no time to monitor the children or help them in their studies, and poor pay structure for teachers which makes them greedy to earn more. However, a few steps can be taken to corrct tis but I know of MLAs who are hand in glove with the lecturers and help them start coaching classes since it is a lucrative business..

There used to be times when teachers were really paid pittance but they displayed exemplary commitment to their duties but the scenario has dramatically changed. Now you have more money but their commitment is almost vanishing!!

In Maharashtra there is infact a strong nexus between politicians and owners of these coaching classes so even if one tries to do away with the classes, nothing can come out of it!

It is pretty much the same here as well, the politicians have totally commercialised education system...Every new college or institute that is started will have some MLA or MP or a minister behind it....
