What We Really Need In Life? Let’s Try To Find Out……… Each and every human being in this world is in search of happiness. However happiness is something which is present inside every individual, but still everyone keeps searching for it here and there. Do you know the reason behind it? Well, the reason is that we are unable to differentiate between our needs and our desires.
It is human tendency that we never see what we have with us but always keep worrying about: a) What we do not have b) What others have Due to this we cannot enjoy our life to the fullest and continue living in the darkness of worries. For example: - Make your choice from the following options: 1) A silver plate or a tasty curry? 2) Sound sleep or a foam mattress?
The honest choice is: 1) Tasty Curry: 2) Sound Sleep: But practically it is not true. Sound sleep and tasty curry are our needs but we desire for silver plate and foam mattress. We are not satisfied by our needs but we keep running for satisfying our desires and when they are not fulfilled, we become upset.
Let me share with you a true incidence. One of my friends is living in similar kind of trauma. She has everything in her life, well settled husband, healthy and intelligent children, car, bungalow everything. But still she is never happy. Her face is always loaded with tension and worries. On one weekend, I went to her place. The whole family was present at home and enjoying themselves. But my friend was quiet as usual. Her husband said that he too is very reluctant to see smile on his wife’s face. She is so lucky to have all the luxuries of life. He clarified that she remains sad because she keeps comparing their standard of living with their neighbors. Their car, bungalow always teases her and she becomes upset. Well, the reason behind my friend’s trauma was quiet shocking. After thinking for sometime, I discovered that, this habit of comparing is present in every person in more or less form. We always have the thirst for gold and silver but the jewelers who sell this gold and silver too are not happy because they are worried about their profit in business, by comparing it with other jewelers.
There is story related to this habit of comparing: Once Maharaja of Indore, Shri Tukajirao Holkar was very upset. His kingdom was facing the British crisis and that made Maharaja tensed. One evening he was sitting in his palace looking at a tree on the roadside. Tears were rolling down his eyes. His minister asked him, “Why are you so sad”. The king said, “Look at the beggar sitting on the roadside under the tree. He was eating his bread and while eating he felt asleep. He is so fortunate. And look at me, I eat the most delicious food everyday, sleep on the most luxurious bed, I have servants roaming around me, but still I spend restless nights.”
The moral of the story is that, one thing which brings joy to one person can be the cause of sorrow for other. The bread and butter of poor or the delicacies of rich, both are of no use if the person eating them is not hungry. Hunger is important. If you are hungry, then even if you eat bread, you will feel as if you are eating delicious payasam. Those who will understand this will not urge for silver plate.God gives everyone according to their need. He can give more than one’s requirement, but the power to digest it is not present with everyone. Hence, we should try to remain contented with what God has given us and that contentment is the secret of happiness.
