To me non-violence is an idiom best understood in purely idealistic setting and if it is truly looked upon as a weapon the human race has to develop radically which might take another thousand years to be potent!

What is ideal setting?. This is when everyone believes in non violence and acts accordingly. People are intellectually and morally honest and can win or lose by arguments and are capable of seeing reason. But this is Utopia and not ground reality.
What is the use of non violence. We should first attempt to settle the differences peacefully. This should be generally possible. We cannot be nonviolent to the cruel, criminal, unreasonable who are amenable to violence only. There is a an ancient advice: Shathe samyat samacharet: Behave with the wicked as suits them.
