Kerala will urge the Centre to give retrospective effect to the subsidy on interest for education loans and to extend the subsidy scheme to cooperative banks also.

The state will also seek relaxations in the repayment of dues in education loans, said the Chief Minister, Mr. Oommen Chandy.

“We have already discussed the issues pertaining to education loans at the recently held conference of the MPs from the state,” Mr Chandy told the Assembly on Monday while replying to a calling attention motion moved by CPI(M) MLA, Mr. Saju Paul. “The MPs would be taking up the matter with the Centre.”

The system of education loan should go. Instead Government should finance the fees and other expenses of deserving and poor students. The government also needs to see what purpose particular education course is serving.

Education loan should be encompassed within the circle of Priority sector lending for all the banks. Targets should be assigned to each bank in value terms by the highest administrative authority in a perticular area .These targets are already given for Agri based loans.
