Growing apprehension about job security is forcing students from IIT to scout for openings in public sector units (PSUs).

There has been a marked increase in the number of IIT graduates taking up jobs at government-owned enterprises over the past few years. In the past four years, 205 students took up jobs with PSUs from IIT-Madras alone.

“Many more PSUs are coming to IITs to hire fresh graduates these days and even students, both from engineering and management streams, are willing to explore growth opportunities in the public sector,” says L.S. Ganesh, who heads the department of management studies in IIT-Madras.

Public sector undertakings also need trained persons and there is nothing surprising that PSUs as well ans private sector get IIT grade. PSUs are professionally run and not family enterprises. So, these may attract more.

PSUs do not offer very handsome salary as compared to the pvt sector/ multinational cos.Yet the job security (peace of mind) and elegant life style are the reasons attracting IITians.

PSUs are getting very aggressive now in order to bring about the turnaround.SAIL(Steel Authority of India Ltd)is one of the best examples. It was running in losses till the year 2000 while it is taking leaps in terms of topline and bottomline growth.
