Friends,

I have chanced upon this gem from Benjamin Franklin:"Who is wise?He that learns from everyone.Who is powerful. He that governs his passions.Who is rich?He that is content.Who is that? Nobody". Please share your views and give your comments.

We learn from the environment. If you place somebody in an empty room and disconnect him from all, he will learn nothing. Thus we learn from others- everyone. One who governs his passions is certainly more powerful because he has accomplished the most difficult task of controlling own passions. I can't agree more on definition of 'rich'. One who is ever struggling to get more is certainly poor as he lacks. If he is content with what he has, he is the richest.

The sufi saints also endorse these views. The medieval poets like Kabir have stressed the need for self contentment.

Gulshan, your comments are very well thought out and as far as contentment as a concept in relation to richness,I don't think he is too far off.We know of so many rich who suffer from poverty of minds because of lack of contentment in their lives!
Chinmoy- I have a mathematical formula for measuring materialist happiness. This is measure by actual money possessed/ money desired. So, if you have one million but you desire two million, you are 50% happy. If you fave only fifty thousand rupees but you are satisfied with twenty five thousand only, you are 200% happy.
