Hindi is our National language or is it not. Unable to understand this discussion topic.
Hindi is definitely not our national language if that is so there is no need for this discussion..But since it is spoken by the majority of the people in India it is being used by the central government as the official language which is not the same..

Hindi is our official language. Not National Language. But it has got nothing to do with the present post. The poster wants the forum to discuss about the possibilities of choosing a National language
As a rule a National Language is supposed to unite the people. But the caste caste system plays the spoil sport. Before opting for the National Language, we should abolish caste system.
Hindi is our official language and it should be declared as National Language. Because a common language all over India will help people to connect and stay united, so there should be a National Language and over most parts of India Hindi is spoken or easily understood, so it should be declared as National Language.

Do you think with the caste system existing, A national language can assure national unity? Even with National Language as Hindi there are caste based fragments, Same language, but within there are different caste based fragments.
Hindi is our Rashtriya Bhasha which translates into National language. Surprised that it is being contested.
When has Hindi been declared an official language of India? I am not aware of the fact, if anyone has more information, do share the link here. Except that it is spoken in more than one states which is not the case with other languages, it is believed to be official but as far as I know, it is not.
As far as Usha's topic is concerned, I think the safest bet would be English language and not Hindi as English is far more widely spoken and understood in the southern and I think, Northeastern states.

On 14 sep 1949 Hindi was declared as official language of India. Apart from Hindi, English was also recognized as official language of India but in 1950 it was declared to put an end to use of English after 15 years of the formation of the constitution (by 26th Jan 1965).

But the question is if any language is chosen as a National language as per you how and on what basis you have chosen and also acts as a Unifying language. Because a National language is supposed to unite the people.
