Literally, Secularism means religion neutrality. Religion is a personal matter and it should not affect your official functions. This s more reevant to those in public service. They must perform their functions without any religious bias. Ideally, one should perform religious rituals privately and not publically. For common people, it will suffice to maintain smoothe relatios with all citizens irrespective of religion and not hate any commuity.

Secularism is separation of governments and persons from religious institutions and religions. Simply put it's promoting a social order separate from religion without displaying hatred, contempt and intolerance towards the other religion or their beliefs.
For a common mean this means Live and let live as far as the religious aspects are concerned..

Secularism means free practice of all religions. Pakistan is theocratic state because they follow one religion and does not give free space to other religions. In India meaning of secularism always has different connotations especially due to right wing and centrist politics. Secualrism means live and let live.

It is amusing to see our politicians quoting words like Secularism and Fasicism and going all out to woo the minorities ! Secularism to me is freedom to practice your religion and beliefs without encroaching upon others which means that the last Government was most insecular since it was openly partial to minorities , that too just one category of minorities ...
Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are two steps ahead !!!

Secularism is proprly implemented in France. They do not allow any rligious symbol in govrnment schools. Once P.M. Manmohan singh raised the issue of not allowing sikh children turban in schools. The French Prsident told that they do not allow any rligiuos symbol in government school- whatever be religion. Even Christian students would not be allowed to wear cross.in school.

It is the same in Germany and Switzerland where you are not allowed to wear burqua or head dress n schools or in offices. However the sikhs are allowed to keep beard and keep their turban on , which is being frowned upon by the locals since they feel it is unfair to let them have this option..

Day in day out, between the ruling party and the opposition parties at the Center, there are thousands of words exchanged on Secularism. Each politician wants to prove that he or she is more "secular' and tries to come out with some point of view.
However, how do, we, the common people see it? We need to give sound reasons as to why we feel what is right.
In a few years time this matter will be over for ever, we are talking about secularism (living in a world of fantasy) and they have plans to finish all such exchanges of words forever see this link and their future plan
