The Priceless Antique Bowl

The Teacher once told the story of a priceless antique bowl that fetched a fortune at a public auction. It had been used by a tramp who ended his days in poverty, quite unaware of the value of the bowl with which he begged for pennies. When a student asked the Teacher what the bowl stood for, the Teacher said, “Yourself!”

Asked to elaborate, he said, “All your attention is focused on the penny knowledge you collect from books and teachers. You would do better to pay attention to the bowl in which you hold it.”

We hold all knowledge in our brain. Our brain is precious only as long as you can properly hold and use information that you gather from the universe. It goes without saying that universe is much greater than any single individual or his brain. .

Absolutely we learn new things daily from people but its up to us how we keep them in our memory and implement them in our lives that's more important. :)
Ye s we should know our limitation also, so it is better to know self first.

now let me try to decode this story.... :P

This story is similar to 'Kasthuri deer' (musk deer) that carries musk beneath its stomach. whenever it bends to eat grass, it gets the smell of musk and searches the whole grass to find its source. it never identifies that "that sweet smell gland" is present inside his body. it's the case of most of us. instead of finding what's present inside us and our potential, we search in the whole world for the best.
it happened in that beggar's case too. he was holding the precious bowl for years to get money for his food. if he has sold it he could have got money to buy everything that he needs. we may laugh at the foolishness of that beggar. but before that, let us look ourselves. we will find that we are not less than that ignorant and poor beggar....searching the whole world, that's hidden inside our soul. :) :P

The problems occur now-a-days are mainly due to interference of few people with others without knowing themselves. Everyone should know about him/her self.

I think it is best to know others than you. You are what others are. If you know others, you know yourself. In absence of mirror, you may see only others and not yourself. Instead of knowing yourself, let others know you.

Well said Gulshan ji. However, to make others know ourselves, we should express ourselves. To do so effectively, we need to know about ourselves.

If we know yourself then we are able to understand the others.

We need to express more about others than ourselves. Others are more interested in themselves rather. We can know about ourselves better through eyes of others. There is some difference in approach of introvert and extrovert.
