No doubt, shallots is more nutritious than onions. But it's very difficult to peel of its skin for its use consuming more time. So, many housewives keep away from them. We, South Indians can't exclude it from our diet even for a single day, even if it's quantity is small.
What about you? Do you consume it frequently?

I have never used this. It appears that this is not available in North India.
It looks similar to Onions, but very small in size. So, it consumes a lot of time to clean it. But it's more tasty than normal onions if added to dishes.
It may even take more than 1 hour to clean 2 cups of it. But if we make Chicken curry, sambar etc with shallots, it tastes best. More nutritious too.
We chop 1 or 2 shallots while popping mustard seeds in oil before adding to curries, fry it light brown, which gives a nice smell to the curries. We may add red chillies too.....
May be, the first time i have heard this word "Shallots". Is it like spring onions?
Somewhat...
It belongs to Onion catagory.......costs also double price.
Yet, if we are able to consume at least half kg every week, it's very healthy. It has many medicinal values too....
It's a best medicine to wound, reduce bp, healthy heart etc....
To remove wounded nails also, it's used. Just crush it and tie it on the finger tightly with a piece of cotton.
It can be added while making chutney too....tastes best than normal onions.
Only problem is time consumption.
It's used for all types of 'Theeyal' curries where grated coconut is fried, grind and added to both veg and non-veg curries. It tastes better.
While frying coconut also, adding chopped shallots and curry leaves give a nice odour.
So now they are using onions instead of shallots.. right.. What about taste? Same as onion?
Ya...me too...for most curries :P :P :P
Shallots are More tasty than onion....
You will cry more while making shallots than onions

That's the main difference
I guess they are more sweet in taste than the normal onion, or not.
they are less sweety than onions. That makes its curries more tasty. I think, not sweet at all.
Actually, when we fry onions more, they become a little sweety. Isn't it?
That's why, many old people (grand mothers), till now, never prefer onions for making dishes as they don't like the sweetness of onions.
You just ask your mother to buy some shallots and prepare Chicken curry. You can spot that difference very easily
