The Maharashtra government on Wednesday framed new rules for taxi drivers to get permits in Mumbai. According to the diktat, taxi drivers must have residence proof of 15 years of domicile in Maharashtra

New taxi permits will only be given to those who can speak, read and write Marathi, as per these rules.

The decision was taken in a Maharashtra government Cabinet meeting earlier today.

A large number of the taxi drivers operating in Mumbai are migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Reacting to this development, the Mumbai taxi union has called the move unacceptable.

The decision of the Maharashtra Government is unfortunate, regionalistic, unconstitutional and inequitable. Mumbai is a multi linguist and metropolitan state inhabited by individuals speaking diverse languages. Good eye sight and driving skill and not proficiency in marathi should be requiriement for getting taxi licence.
