Cartoons are aimed to poke and provoke in a subtle manner a person or an institution about their good and bad deeds. cartoons are not necessarily always meant for criticising. They are used even to shower praises on a person who has done his bit well.
Shankar, the inimitable cartoonist through his Shankar's weekly used to do yeomen service to the nation through his thought provoking cartoons. And do you know who is his ardent fan ? No less than Panditji.

Art is all about proportion. Cartoon is just the reverse. Disproportionate images are called cartoons. For example- very long nose, long teeth, small eyes- will evoke laughter or offence. Thus cartoon may be considered anti art.

I beg to differ with you. cartoonist has a social responsibility to highlight the injustice in the society. Cartoonism is both an art and science. History is replete with examples of how a cartoon changed the course of history. It's only cartoonists with mediocre standards indulge in mean way of digging the people. Our own Indian cartoonist Shankar has become a favourite of all the commoners as well as veteran politicians like Ram manohar lohia, Nehru to name a few.

Bal Thakrey, Sudhir Telang, RK Laxman are some of the very famous ones who changed some of the ways of happenings in India.

I don't say that cartoon is not an art and science or any way not significant for social causes. I only mentioned he nature of cartoon. How you make cartoon. This you do by disproportion. For example, you will make very long legs and small chest, a very long nose or distort in some other way. The other art form display images in proportion as against cartoon which depends on disproportion.

Rk Laksman now and the pioneer of cartoon art Shankar then played an pivotal role in correcting the ways of errant politicians and mean social customs in India. Its wrong to think that cartoons are meant for criticising alone

What about abstract art sir, when they say it is a woman, I see a horse there. I feel confused and a complete fool when I happen to be in such art-galleries.

There are many genres in art. Like cubism, abstractism, realism to name a few, cartoonism is another genre with a purpose and aim. Cartoonists who deviate from the aims and objectives of cartoonism are a mediocre lot.
