Some of this was practiced in India also even by Non Muslims. The young women would never go alone. They would always go with some male member. However, for formality, they would move with a small male boy. I remember that as a child, I would have to accompany elder girls- even those in neighborhood. The male child would be too small and would be satisfied with toffee or chocolate. Even if the girl talked to her boyfriend, the male boy would not understand.
