a tribal woman in Madhya Pradesh pressed very hard for a toilet in her in law house even at risk of breaking marriage. This is indeed commendable.

Jai Ram Ramesh has commented that women demand mobile phones more than toilet. This statement appears faulty. First, the women demanding phones are those who have already toilet facility. Secondly, there should be no such gender based generalization. Not only women, men may also be similarly crazing for phones.

There are still some remote places of Tamil Nadu where toilets are not built. Some of them are superstitious while others find it shame to go to 'toilets'.
It's a truth.

there are places in India especially in Eastern UP where people are using fields as toilets. They are not planning a toilet despite incentives available to go for them.

Going to field for toilet is an old age custom. This is okay in villages. The excreta also gets converted to manure. But this is not okay in urban and semi urban areas. Now even villages are getting urban. So, the toilets may be necessary now. However, this depends on how men and women feel comfortable.
