The field of sports shows how backward India is in the field of sports. With a population of 1.2 billion, we are unable to win any sports involving strength and speed anywhere. A few winners here and there does not hide the stark fact the priority of the Indian governments have been lopsided. remember one swallow does not make the summer. You can only get sportsmen if the NATIONAL HEALTH improves. Here we have failed and per capita consumption of protein is among the lowest in the world. What to talk of there is famine and shortage of food. Who is responsible?

Abroad people ask me why your nation 1.2 billion cannot throw up a single winner in athletics and games of strength. I give some lame answer and walk away. It is an insult. The priority of the government should not be to run bullet train but FIRST, feed the people with a healthy diet. Even Mars probe has little meaning if a child goes half hungry to bed. That's why I say we need a Kemel Mustapha , sadly there is no one.

Like erstwhile Communist countries China also used to spend huge money on trying to win as many medals as possible in international tournaments. The purpose was twofold, to make western countries especially USA look small and show the efficient Communist system. East Germany used to win disproportionate share of medals under this scheme. However since collapse of Communism even Russia is finding it difficult to win its earlier share of medals. Today China has achieved a status of world's second largest economy and is thus rightly able to divert huge funds to develop sports and win a large chunk of medals. Our economy is less than 15% of China's economy and we cannot afford to divert huge funds into development of sports just to show how great we are. But since many years tere is a sports Ministry and gradually more funds and facilities are being provided. You cannot expect a country to be backward in other indices and outshine in sports. It is an all round development. Blaming for the sake of blaming is a game being played in the forum by some sportsmen/women. Keep it up.

When we compare India to other countries , smaller snd less developed two or three decades ago, we still see how much better they were at sports because whatever could be done was done to the full extent us. Indians had and still have a tendency to do everything in a half hearted manner and our leaders have taken full advantage of this fact. This made even the few outstanding ones suffer because of lack of funds and help from the government..

I agree with you. Indians are indeed easy going and politicians particularly Congress concentrated on vote bank politics and corruption and took Indian people for a ride. So obviously feeding the masses and as a corollory sports had little importance.

The biggest and Major Sorts scams took place during Congress regime. Who can forget Sports scams like Commonwealth Games scam, Match fixing scam in Cricket to name a few? And it goes without saying, it were the Congress people who were involved in these scams. Expecting from such Govt anything except Vote Banks is an exercise in futility.

Very true, the Congress under Manmohan Singh looted the nation and made money in all sports events. They were not bothered about sport, but how to loot the state.

I would like to bring to the attention of readers about an incident about 7-8 years back. there was a women's hockey match between India  and Hongkong and I was sitting with a few British friends at the Singapore club bar. Now Hongkong is a tiny city, not even half of Mumbai. I cut a sorry figure when a nation of 100 billion could not throw up a team to beat Hongkong. We lost and my friends roared with laughter. Tongue in cheek one of my friends a retired British major settled in Singapore commented  let Indian girls at least develop their legs if they don't have the stamina to beat anybody. I saw the recent women cricket match with Pakistan in the world cup and sadly we lost to Pakistan. What to say?

True. The incident you related says it all. Unless a Nation is healthy and gives utmost importance to Sports and other related aspects, that contribute to the health of the Nation, nothing can be achieved.

The previous government had money for everything but for essentials like sports. If you see today's news report, Priyanka Vadra is in the news for asking and getting a rent of her asking Rs 8800 for a Rs53,000 bunglow in Delhi in 1997. The property is worth several lakhs in rent no. She has gobbled  up the money and is now building a huge bunglow, got after many laws and rules were bent to accommodate her. In fact the entire family has been leeching on the nation for decades . This is Congress culture that  has been the bane of our country. Now all political parties ant to follow this filthy practice started and nurtured by them..

The size of population has nothing to do with skills. The team that has skill is surely going to make a mark. Just because India is a big country then it should win in all tournaments is foolhardy. By that logic Usain Bolt who comes from Jamaica should  not even qualify for his event. Personal physique, self determination, passion, commitment, hardwork are the ingredients for producing excellent sportspersons. Government suport can boost these. If they are not there no amount of support can help. All you can say is corruption, Congress and now Priyanka. How much venom is there in you and you keep taking it out one way or the other all the time in company of foreigners for reinforcement. Bring a good topic for discussion.

For die hard Congress supporters, members, Sycophants or whatever else they may want to call themselves, bitter truth and negative facts about their leaders seems like venom, so be it...However, I doubt if the shameless leaders would ever leave their comfort zone they have created for themselves over the past 60 odd years ..

Sarwan Singh, won the Gold medal for 110 m hurdles at 1954 Asian games. Now he is a Cab driver. Sita Sahu did the Nation proud after securing third place in 200m and 1600m  at the special Olympics in 2011. Now she is a Golgappa seller. These are just two cases who had determination and commitment. Had there been State support, this pathetic condition would not have happened. And in those years, Congress was ruling the country.

In my city a few months back a news item created a bit of stir. The story along with a picture showed the captain of the Indian  deaf and dumb men's cricket team forced to sell golgappas on a prominent street for a living. Many citizens came forward to help him financially. A month back he went abroad along with the team to participate in a international tournament where they defeated Pakistan. He did not have money for dresses as well as to and fro travel. Some NGO's and citizens contributed to make his dream come true. On his return he expressed his sincere thanks to his supporters and has gone back to selling golappas on the pavement. The plus point is that he is patronised by large number of customers than before. In my state, BJP is in power since nearly twenty plus years and the concerned player is incidentally a muslim.  Now if all three of you are honest replace Congress from your comments and replace it with BJP.  I have no leanings towards Congress but take a stand tat makes you think so because the reality is that all politicians are nearly same. They all have biases, weaknesses etc like others of another party. It is ATTITUDE which matters. You can blame Congress but what are you going to gain. Let BJP accumulate history by ruling for a long time, the story will be same a few percent less or more. But if it gives you a kick to blame Congress everyday go ahead your health is more important.

No. It won't give ma a kick to blame any Political Parties without a valid reason But I believe putting forth the truth. All those examples i mentioned above happened during Congress regime. Is it not a truth ? Search in the Google about those cases and find out for your self whether  what I said true or not.

Yes that happened in Congress rule. Parroting it everyday what is going to change. They are no longer in power. Stating the obvious is not making a contribution.

Certainly a contribution, when there are people who support their patronized parties  blindly.

I have seen RSS training athletes and other players like Kabbadi and Kho Kho in grounds here in my town. They collect funds and serve refreshments to  the youngsters and even help them out when they go to play state level tournaments by organising place to stay etc .. One should actually take their example and set up sports camps where aspiring sportspersons can come together and get trained.

Sports Camps organized by RSS are good. In fact there are several such camps spread over the country. Though not organized by the RSS, here in  AP. there are Akhadas ,wrestling coaching centres. These centres collect funds from rich people and businessmen  ,who are interested in promoting wrestling. But the funds collected are not enough to prepare candidates for big events like Olympics. For preparing the candidates for Olympics, a much sophisticated infrastructure is essential. For wrestling a special kind of shoes are required which are very expensive. For all these things, support from the State is required.

We blame the Congress because it ruled the country for 60 years starting from Nehru. It had lopsided priorities and sports suffered. I will say even Vajpayee  was hemmed in because he never had a simple majority. Now Modi is in power with a majority and I think he should do something. Obviously if he does nothing he will go the Congress way.

well for the people who don't think that modi hasn't done anything till now let me tell you to those who think like that either he/she is an uneducated person or he/she is a mad.

It is very true, because of wrong priorities, Congress committed mistakes which are innumerable in number. Of course, after independence, Congress was in such a hurry to build a Nation, neither the Nation Building nor any other such activities could be done in full. It goes without saying, during this process, The Sports sphere suffered a lot. Now with the advent of Modi Government, hopes are cropping up to rectify the faults committed by the Congress.  Else, BJP too will be shown the exit by the people who  made the BJP as the country's ruler role. None can survive the wrath of the people.
