Open Means Open Means

In the creative world of academics, at some point or the other one is often faced with the question of how different a designer is from a artist. To a viewer, both designers and artists are people who have a wild imagination, who keep sketching and painting, making beautiful things and are often either quiet or eccentric by nature. So , how do we really find the line that distinguishes both professions?

The answer is very simple. The artist pleases himself. The Designer pleases others. Art is a medium through which the artist expresses himself. His style, his state of mind, his message to the world, his appreciation of beauty all get manifested in the form of great masterpieces. Some well known artists were Picasso, Van Gogh and so on. Design however is more often the solution to a problem or a solution that brings about a change for the better. There is often a societal need or a desire that brings about the existence of a design.Karim Rashid, Philippe Strack are some known designers. Leonardo da Vinci was a great designer as well as artist.

An Art is successful if it evokes diverse feelings in different people. A design , on the other hand is successful if it appeals to many people in a similar way and solves their problems. To summarise, While Art is art, Design is useful Art.
