People reading the topic might think that I am here to discuss the chances of winnings, cricket analysis or some cricket jargon.Be assured,it isn't any of those.
Today,30th March.2011,our country's team plays against the neighboring country's team and for me at home time has stood still.
Our family is not a joint family but everyone lives in the same premises.I really can't describe the spirit here.Such excitement in the air.My husband has big family. His cousin has his summer vacations going on now. After the exam euphoria has ended,he has chalked out such elaborate plans for the evening. His friends have teamed in to meet at one place to view the match.
Last night,we cousins were sitting together to see which team has made it to the finals.Another cousin brother said he had to leave for work early in the morning so that he can finish off by 2:00 pm and watch the match..My husband had planned for a half day.
Everything seemed ok in the morning as I was preparing breakfast.Until my sister in law came in and told me,we all plan to have dinner today. This is what we are preparing, the menu was laid out.Who will make the snacks?Where will we call gather? When should we all come?Lets make something special today?
The youngest member who was happy his school has got over arranged for crackers. The aunties in our place had made arrangement for snacks, popcorn, pepsi. All this for a game?...it seemed more like an engagement ceremony is being planned where elders come together to fix a date for marraige!
The elders were just waiting for time to pass by and were excited as the clocked ticked by.As for me, I never understood cricket...I sure did not understand the excitement.I do understand the spirit of the game, but such preparations left me dumbstruck for the love of the game.
This made me realize that every house might be having such an experience.I,well I was stuck doing salads and helping all the other housewives cook for the family. The only discussions I was hearing was " Oh India is so close to winning" "If New Zealand would have won it would have been better for India" "Arey,Pakistan is strong team, today's match will be like a mini-final" .....O my God! O my God! O dear God! These conversations were driving me crazy.
Finally I did realize one thing, even for the love of the game,a family has come together putting aside their differences to just enjoy something as a united unit.Even in a marraige people murmur, but here, they are just purely for the game.Imagine the PM's of two countries coming together keeping aside their stressful decisions just to spread the message of peace.
I also commend the media and the captains of both the teams;who have this time not promoted the spirit of war as general.Instead they are promoting the spirit of the game and say that this is not a battle but a playground for just cricket.Sometimes I fail to understand our human nature. We get angry within the house over some utensils, food not being cooked well, invitations not given by relatives, some shrewd comment said by someone at some event within the family and we are ready put it aside to enjoy a simple game.Strange!
Even for few hours,if a family is together, its best to enjoy the spirit of oneness.Every family might be facing this.Well I don't know what would happen today.May the best team win,but whatever the outcome I am glad for one thing, victory or loss, we would not be facing the verdict alone ,but being one.
