The film starts with Mohanlal going for a morning walk with his dog admiring the sun after a long time.Then the title starts with music and showing kamal

doing welding & soldering , keeping 5 to 6 mobile phones without mobile cover, working with a PCB etc. When i saw the film first time i couldn't understand what

kamal is doing.

 

Kamal is travelling in an MTC bus having a black bag with sticker showing 'I love India' .While getting down he leaves the bag in the bus itself. The next scene shows

kamal keeping a similar bag in the upstair corridor of  a shopping mall.Then he is waiting for the train in chennai central station.And the train comes. He boards the

train and keeps a black bag in the side upper birth of a compartment . Inspector Sethu is coming with his wife  and kid and telling kamal to leave the way.Kamal is leaving

that place.Then sethu after chatting with wife (Anu) leaves the train.

 

Kamal goes to a police station and tells his name is Srinivasa Ramanujam and he had lost his purse which contains a credit card,some cash,driving license and his wife's photo.

After giving his address and signing the complaint he asks inspector Venkatesan the way to toilet.He goes to the toilet and places the black bag in the gap beneath

the wash basin.

 

Venue : Police Commissioner Raghavan Maran's ( Mohanlal is the commissioner ) office.Film actor Aravindan (Sriman ) meets the commissioner and gives a complaint

that he needs Z security because somebody is threating to kill him.If it is not possible he will go the chief minister.Then mohanlal calls policeman Sethu to come

immediately to his office.

 

 

Kamal is buying vegetables in the market while a TV on the shop shows the programme 'Pradiyum Bimbamum' hosted by the anchor named Natasha in TV1 channel.

Topic is 'Pakistan and Terrorism'. The scene shows two dolls General Musharaf and American president George Bush. Musharaf calls bush and expresses his grief

for the 9/11 bomb blasts .Bush says "What are you blabbering in the midnight of 10th september?. Then Mushraf says "Oh.Sorry.I am confused with this time difference.

I should call you tomorrow".

 

 

Mohanlal introduces inspector Sethu to Aravindan and says he will handle matter.The next scene shows Inspector Arif ( The guy who paired with Trisha in the film

'Abhiyum Nanum' ) having a chat with a criminal turned to a police informer. Criminal says he has no protection and the constables who has come as a security to his

house is eve teasing his sister.

 

Kamal is going with his vegetable bags to the top roof of a building under construction while Inspector Arif goes to the police informer's house and beats the constable there.

Kamal is arranging his laptop, 5 mobile phones,landline phone etc and calls the commissioner Maran and says"I have planted 5 bombs in the city and it will explode by 6 pm.

The bombs are more powerful than the blasts happened previously in Meenambakkam Airport and Sriperumbudhur. I will again call back after 30 minutes.By the time you

choose a negotiator for talking with me and hereafter i will talk only with that person".Maran tells inspector Sankarayya to trace the call and asks inspector Sethu to make a

call to the Chief Minister.

 

 

Kamal calls the TV anchor Natasha and says " I have a sensational news for you.It can be even news of the year.If you want that news,go immediately with your cameraman in

Annasalai.This is a live show and it will be the memorable day in your career."Natasha goes to the police station and waits outside.

 

As Chief Minister's PA says he has just come from election campaign and very tried, Maran talks to the Chief Secretary Lakshmi and requests her to come to his office immediately

as the situation is very critical.Maran's team has found that the call came from a prepaid SIM card with the name 'Thayumanavar'.He organises a meeting with this team members

and lakshmi and says about the call he got while lakshmi says it should be a blank call.At the same time maran's mobile rings.Kamal asks "Who is the negotiator"? Maran says

"We have yet to decide.Talk with me till that time". Kamal says "Don't waste my time.I will again call in another 5 minutes.Negotiator should be decided by that time".

Inspector Sankarayya says he could not trace this call also as it was of short duration but it was not the same number as the first. CM calls lakshmi and enquires about the

situation and gives full power to her for dealing with that.As she is not ready to take the blame if something went wrong,Maran says he will take the responsiblity

but there should not be any interference in his work.

Third call is coming from kamal to maran. Kamal demands the release of four prisoners namely Ahmadullah,Iniyakdhullah,Abdhullah and Karamchand lalla.He says that he

knows three of these are in chennai jails and one in bangalore. He wants all the four in a single place in another 1 hour's time.Otherwise evening will come and bombs will blast.

Maran tells kamal that you don't even have a name.Kamal says "Your intelligence would have traced the SIM cards by the time.Anyway i will explain myself. First call

i gave is from the name 'Thayumanavar' who died in coimbator bomb blast. Second call had the name 'Yashwant kunatkar 'who died in  mumbai bomb blast.Third call had

the name 'Asha Bharva' who died in Guwahati.She was pregnant at that time." He also says that 3 kg of RDX bomb was placed in the Annasalai police station and is

going to blast in another 20 minutes and hangs up.

Kamal calls natasha and tells her about the bomb placed in the police station. She sees lot of policeman and police dogs going into the anna salai police station. With the help

of the dog bomb squad found the bomb. Sethu calls maran that the bomb is going to blast in another 3 minutes and he is not sure whether it can be diffused or not.Kamal calls

maran and tells "Are you believing me now that iam not making any joke.If you want i can tell the way to diffuse the bomb?".Maran says ok and kamal says the way and the

bomb is diffused.An inspector comes and tells maran that he has arrested a person who had supplied 6 kg of RDX couple of days ago.But he is not talking and has ate

cocaine also.A doctor puts injection to that person and says drug effect will go in another 30 minutes.Maran calls Arif to come to office within half an hour while Natasha

reports to the TV about the happenings in the police station.

 

The arrested person tells Arif that he has given the RDX to a person named Rafique  Inspector sankarayya explains the histroy of the four prisoners to maran's team and

Lakshmi and says if these people are released then there is no meaning for the efforts we have taken so far as these people are very dangerous.

 

Maran calls natasha and asks about the calls she got from kamal.He explains that she is used as a tool by kamal for monitoring the actions taken for this demands.Maran

tells sethu to give a statement for Natasha's TV channel about the shifting of the prisoners without disclosing the truth and saying that they are going to be shifted for

security reasons.Arif got the information from rafique that he has given RDX to a middle aged person behind a building under construction near Rajaratnam stadium,

Egmore. He searches that building but could not locate kamal even though kamal sees Arif. Arif informs maran that there is nobody in that building and maran immediately

tells sethu to assemble the prisoners in Puzhal prison. And the " Intermission" comes at this point.

 

CM calls lakshmi and asks about further proceedings and says that this should not affect election results. This scene depicts the nature of our politicians who always

cares about themselves and their victory. Natasha reports that the prisoners are shifted to a undisclosed location.After seeing this kamal calls maran and thanks him for

shifting the prisoners and says "Take all the prisoners and come to the old Sozhavaram airport at 5 pm with two police men for their security.Also i need two cell phones

with speaker and teleconferencing facility.Leave them at one corner of the airport and ask your policeman at the corner.I need a lot of landing space. I will call you

again by 5 pm".

 

Sankarayya tells maran that he could not locate the call as it is going to different countries.So he could be a communication specialist.Inspector venkatesan meets maran and tells

about the conversation between him and kamal.Maran tells sethu to bring a computer specialist and draw the picture of kamal with the help of the inspector and then show the

picture to rafique who has supplied the RDX to him.

 

Kamal calls natasha and asks her to come to Sozhavaram old Airport.Maran explains Arif and Sethu about the plan for taking the prisoners to airport and says that chennai is in

your hand.Arif and sethu along with the four prisoners boards in a millitary container lorry.Sankarayya brings an intelligent IIT dropped out student for tracing the call from kamal.

Meanwhile the computer specialist draws the picture of kamal and confirms it with rafique.

 

 

Arif calls maran and says they have reached the venuce. Kamal calls maran and says that he wants to talk with the four prisoners . Kamal asks all of them to tell their names

for confirmation. Then he tells arif to shift the prisoners to the jeep standing in the other side and says that the prisoners should sit in the following order.

Driver seat : Inayadhulla,Ahmedullah (next to driver seat) and other two on back.He also tells arif to go to commissioner's office after shifting them.Kamal tells maran after

arif reaches office he will the places where bomb is kept.Kamal tells to Inayadhulla "I know you are a good driver.Key and mobile are in the jeep.As soon as you start the jeep

a call will come to you and tell where to go.

 

In commissioner's office,the IIT guy says that this is a local call and he can find out the location exactly if it comes one more time while in the aerodrum arif and Sethu along

with the four prisoners are going towards the jeep.Suddenly arif catches Abdullah and says that let the other go.He won't leave him till the bombs are found.Sethu argues

with him to release . But arif declines. Abdullah is arguing with arif to release him Rest of the three boarded the jeep and as inayadullah puts the key and starts, the phone rings.

Karamchand takes the phone after searching and says hello.

The unexpected thing happens here. Jeep blasts to pieces.Kamal calls maran and tells him "Ask Arif what happened there.I want to know".Arif says that "Jeep is blown.His

plan is to kill the prisoners and not to save them .But abdullah is alive".Kamal is slightly shocked and says arif that he had done wrong thing and abdhullah also should be killed.

Then only he will tell about the bomb.At this point kamal explains why he did all this. He says he is a common man and it took only four weeks for him to make this plan.

He says terrorism can be eradicated only by terrorism.He says that reporter natasha should go to the place along with an ambulance and doctor.And the doctor should confirm that

abdullah is dead.Then only he will about the bomb.Maran orders arif to shoot his head.After hearing the conversation between maran and kamal the IIT guy though he found out

the location says he could not find and the inspector venkatesan says he could not recollect fully the face of kamal.

 

Natasha reports that while the policemen were shifting,the prisoners were trying to escape and shooted arif.So they were killed for self protection.Maran changes from his police

dress to casuals,took his gun and leaves the office. After seeing natasha's report kamal calls maran and tells that he had not kept any bomb. All are empty bags.Kamal packs

everything , puts the bag in a drum and keeps a bomb to destroy the things.Meanwhile maran reaches the place and sees kamal coming out of the building and offering lift to

him if he wants.

 

 

The last scene of the film heads to the same place where it had started. Yes.. Maran walking in the beach. He says "I don't have the courage and anger of the common man.

This should happen.Hats off to him".

 

My comments about the film: The film was very good with sharp dialogues in many places. The scene that stayed in my mind is the one in climax. Kamal says nowadays

making bomb is not difficult.Type how to make a bomb in search engine.You will find many websites telling that.Out of interest after seeing the film i just typed how to

make a bomb in google. Yes...it returned many results indicating that technology is also spoiling people.

The Pacific
This new series from HBO takes off again during the Second World War, and is about the battle between the Americans and Japanese on the islands in the Pacific Ocean. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor the Japanese occupied islands in the ocean, including Guadalcanal. During the first 2 episodes we follow the Marines during the attack on Guadalcanal in the summer of 1942, this attack was the first major invasion of the Americans on Japanese territory and was characterized by large losses on both sides.

After Guadalcanal, we follow the marines to Cape Gloucester, where in December 1943 with the 1st Marine Division Australian allies came ashore at a military airport in Japanese hands krijgen.Vervolgens come Peliliu and finally to Iwo Jima in the battle for Okinawa to come at the end of the war. The battle for Okinawa lasted from March 1945 until June 1945. During the battles for Okinawa were nearly 200,000 people dead, including 12,000 American soldiers, the killing of the Japanese side, much to suicide, these were both civilians and soldiers.

This new series will be compared with "Band of Brothers" are a lot grimmer. There are atrocities on both sides to see, including the stretch of golden teeth to Japanese soldiers killed by marines.

There are also interviews with veterans from the battlefields to the story as authentic as possible to tell. The series since 2003 in the making and the makers would have a budget Between 150 and 200 euros milioen. Recordings have taken place mainly in Australia

The Pacific may be the successor to Band of Brothers, it is certainly not a sequel. None of the original cast and characters will also return, there is a completely new but also relatively unknown cast attracted. It is true that many of the original cameramen and crew members of "Band of Brothers" again contribute to this series.

One of the best film in 2008 and it is best known for its excellent music and if you are a Tamil cinema fan you would have guessed it and the movie is Varanam Ayiram.Credit goes to Surya who took tremendous effort to act in this move, who also developed six pack for this movie.So in this article let us see about the technicians and artists who has worked in this movie.

Actually Gautam decided to use the name Naan Thaan and Udal Porul Aavi for this project but after that he decided to go with the title "Varanam Ayiram" which means 1000 elephants and this also symbolically means that the hero has the strength of thousand elephants to overcome the problems he faced in his life and start a new life.

But many felt that this film is a combination of Cheran's tow hit films Autograph and Thavamai Thavamirinthu, where the story Autograph is more or less like a person who was dejected after the love failure and Thavamai Thavamirinthu is about the Son's love fo his father.

Initially the project was set to create some history in Indian Film Industry, when they decided to shoot in Afghanistan for 10 and eventually it would have becomes the second Indian film after Kabul Express to be filmed in Afghanistan, but later due to some security reasons Gautam dropped this plan.

Another interesting thing that happened during the post production is that the production managers have lost the film reels while they were returning to India, and this reel was very important as it contained all the scenes and songs that were shot in USA.The production managers seemed to have to lost the reels in the Singapore airport.It has been estimated that these reels worth around 2.5 to 3 crores.But fortunately the Singapore Airport authorities found the reels and they handed over to the team.

Behind the screen

i)This film was directed by the famous Tamil director Gautham Vasudev Menon.This is the second time Gautam has directed Surya and their previous work was also a hit film, Kaka Kaka.As a matter of fact Kaka Kaka was a turning point for both of them.Gautam also mentioned that this film is very close to his heart because he considers the Krishnan character in this movie as his own father.

Initially he announced that shooting will take place in Afghanistan for 10 days, but due to security issues he called off this idea.Gautam also said that this film is more or less based on the story of the movie "Forrest Gump" and also said that he will change accoring to Tamil audience.

The secret for Gautam's success is his team.In all his film he considers Harris Jayaraj as the music director and naturally all his film becomes a musical treat.But reports says that after this film Gautam had a misunderstanding with Harris and as a result of this he chose A.R.Rahman for his next film "Vinnaithandi Varuvaya".

ii)This film was produced by Venu Ravichandran, also called as Aaskar Ravichandran and he also distributed the film in India.

iii)The music for this film is composed by Harris Jayaraj.All the songs were hit and they eventually ruled the Tamil cinema in the year 2008.

iv)This film was distributed all over the world by Cloud Nine Pictures  and by Bharat Creations in USA.

v)Officially this film was treleased on November 14, 2008 and it ran for more than 100 days in many theatre.

vi)R. Rathnavelu is the cinematographer of this film and those who have watched the film could gave understand the great work done by Rathnavelu.Especially in songs he has done a fabulous job.All the songs were great hit and credit also goes to Ratnavelu because without his work the picturization wouldn't have become so good.

vi)The budget of this film is around 14 crores and this was a blockbuster in 2008 and it managed to earn 28 crores and was second best in the year after Kamal's Dasavatharam.This film also gross around 6 crores in Chennai alone.

vii)Another important man who is responsible for the success of this movie is Anthony Gonsalvez, who is the editor of this movie and he also has done a good job, which marked the way for the success of this movie.

Artists and Cast

i)Surya as Krishnan.This was quite a challenging role for Surya, which he has never done before as a 70 year old man.He was a very good father and a lovely husband.He lives and dies for his family.He is aslo shown as a cute lover when he proposed to Malini.He usually smokes and it resulted in throat cancer.

The most important thing about this character is that he is very encouraging and he also encourages Surya to go to USA and bring back Meghna.Apart from this he also teaches the basics of bowling in cricket to Surya.

ii)Surya as Surya.He is a charming lover and he loves his family.He is very much close to his dad.He is patriotic, and a scene in this movie where he carries the operation to rescue the hostage from terrorist, inspite of hearing the his father death news on the midway of the operation.

He has a great role in this movie and worked out so hard for his role of he army officer and National Security Guard commando.He is also addicted to drugs when Meghna died.He is very courageous and he usually never give up and thats why he decides to go to USA in search of Meghna, thanks to the encouragement from his father.

iii)Simran as Malini Krishnan.This is a very good role for Simran and she is very lovely and kind to his husband and children Surya and Shriya.But one thing we can feel in this movie that make up work was not so natural at her old age when compared to Krishnan,i.e Surya at his older age looks very natural than that of Simran.

But when we speak of her character her performance was good and in the climax she gives hope to Surya, who lost his father, that Krishnan will always watch and bless thier family.Initially Tabu was chosen for this role but she rejected thi offer.

iv)Sameera Reddy as Meghna.This is her first Tamil film after many Telugu movies.After this film she was appreciated by all for her performance and also got many oppurtunities in Tamil films.She doesn't come throughout the movie as she appers only for a short while.The introduction scene for her takes place in the Train where she meets Surya.Then in USA she was killed in Okhlahama in a bomb blast while she was attending a seminar.

She was shown as brilliant student who tops the university in this film.Initially Genelia D'Souza  was chosen for this movie but due to some salary issues she rejected this offer.But prior to that Deepika Padukone  was all set to make her film debut in this character even before acting in Om Shanti Om.But she backed off due to the inactiveness of the film during that time

v)Divya as Priya.She is the daughter of Krishnan's friend Thomas.She is also the best friend of Surya's sister Shriya.But later in the film it was revealed that even from her young age she was in love with Surya.She later propose to Surya, but that time Surya rejects.But after some years she meets Surya at NSG commando base in Dehradun and that time Surya also expresses his love and after that they get married and have a son.

2008 was a very good year for Tamil cinema and three most important films that won many awards are Dasavatharam, Subramaniyapuram and of course Varanam Ayiram.Varanam Ayiram managed to win many awards and especially at the prestigiouis Vjiay awards,ITFA,Flimfare awards and the TamilNadu State awards.

Well. to start with Gautam is one of the modern director in the Tamil film Industry and he is more known for giving a musical treat films.When you look at all his films he gave importance to songs and moreover their team which consists of Lyricst Thamarai and Music Director Harris Jayaraj, gave great entertainment for the fans with the help of the songs.

His debut film "Minnale" was a blockbuster and especially the music was smash hit.This team with Harris resulted in many successful films for Gautam and after Varanam Ayirmam,Gautam chose A.R.Rahman for his next film and not Harris Jayaraj, due to the misunderstanding between them,When asked for the reason he simply replied "The decision not to work together was not mine.Hope everyone got that"

He was born as Gautam Vasudev Menon on 25th February 1975.Gautam started his Carrier as ad maker and he was also successful in that field.But later he decided to enter film industry and as a result he worked under Rajiv Menon and also took a cameo role in Rajiv Menon's super hit Minsara Kanavu.Gautam also worked as a assistant director in that film and gained experience.

Gautam is well known for directing Action thriller movies and especially after Minnale all his film are more or less based on action thriller and also police stories.The film Kaka Kaka was a smash hit and it showed the power of Police department and till date in Tamil cinema no one has tried in a different way as Gautam did in Kakka Kakka.

After the release of this film in Telugu as Gharshana, starring Venkatesh and Asin, rumours spread that this film was to be remade in Russian language and it will be a story about a Russian cop who is a specialist in encounter.But till date no such project has come.Some reports says that some scenes of this film are based on the famous English movie Se7en.

Gautam's entry in Bolywood was not successful when he remade Minnale in Hindi with the title Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein,starring Madhavand,Diya Mirz(Tamil:Reema Sen) and Saif Ali Khan(Tamil:Abbas).Evethough the tamil version did well in Hindi this was not a huge hit.

Then in 2006 Gautam started his new project and this time with "Ulaga Nayagan" Kamalhassan.This is also based on the story of a police officer.This was a Blockbuster in 2006 and in 2006 most of the ringtones in cell used the song "Manjal Veyil..", because as usual this team done the trick again with all songs were smash hit.

Kamal did a splendid job in this movie and this is action packed and a thrilling movie.This film ranked first in terms of gross revenue in 2006.But the entire team faced lots of problem due to the producer's suicide attempt.But however Seventh Channel took the job and completed the movie.

After the sucess of this movie, Gautam next chose SarathKumar for his next film "Patchaikili Muthucharam' which is a thriller.But the film doesn't do well at the box office as expected, eventhough Sarath and Jyotika's acting was critcally appreciated.

His next project Varanam Ayiram was very close to him as he considers that it was a tribute to his father.This film is based on the Son's love for his father.This was a great hit and also Surya's performance in this film was fabulous.But unfortunately after this film Gautam and Harris got separated due to some misunderstanding.

His next film is "Vinnaithandi Varuvaya" starring, Silambarasan and Trisha.2 times Oscar award winner A.R.Rahman composed the music for this film and this is a new team as this was the first film for A.R.Rahman under Gautam's direction.At presen the shooting is going for this movie and we can expect its release very soon.

v)Vettaiyadu Villaiyadu: For the first time he dances in this film.In the song "Manajal veyil..." he gives a special appearance when he dances along with some of American dancers, while Kamal and Jyotika walks in front of them.

vi)Pachaikili Muthucharam: He does a came role as a passenger in the bus, during the song"Kadhal Konjam...." when SarathKumar,Andreah and their son were travelling in a bus.

vii)Vaaranam Aayiram: He comes as a masked man who shows the correct place of the terrorist to Surya's team.
