Great artists together for a great film:

Hi friends in this article let us discuss about one of the oldest but superb films of KamalHassan, and it is none other than “16 Vayathinile”, which is translated as at the 16th age or at the age of sixteen. This is really an amazing village. I guess every KamaHassan’s fan would have definitely watched this movie and incase if you have missed this try to download form internet and enjoy this film. Maestro Illayaraja has done a great job in composing the music for this film, as all his songs were huge hit.

alt

This is not a simple movie because each and every character in this film has done a great job and let me start with the Hero’s character.

i) Kamalhassan as”CHAPPANI”: The name Chappani is well known for innocent character in Tamil Nadu and this trend started only after this film. Kamal is an innocent man in the village and his innocent behavior and different walking style impressed everyone. Kamal was one of the leading young heroes at that time and even at that time he was very brave to do this character and at one scene he also appeared in one piece. This was the talk of the town, because no one would have acted in this character, except Kamal. This made many to predict that Kamal would became one of the best heroes of all time, not only in Tamil industry but also in entire India.

ii) Sri Devi as Mayil: She is considered as the beauty of the village, and everyone in the village like here. She was also educated and her dream is to become ea teacher. Everyone praised her beauty and this made her to think about marrying a well educated man. Chappani is hr cousin in this film.

iii) Rajinikanth as parattai: Our superstar “Rajinikanth” has done a negative role in this film and his character was very much appreciated by everyone. He often teases everybody and used to say “Idhu Epadi Irukuthu?” which means “How is it?”, to his group members. As a matter of fact this might also be considered as the start of using Punch Dialogue for Rajini. He later used the English version of this dialogue “Idhu Epadi Irukuthu?” as “How is it?” in of his films called “Veera”. Another important thing is that Koundamani was also in this group and he along with Rajinikanth, provided us a great entertainment.

alt

Why this film is very special?

This film is very special and it has many reasons and let us sees some of the main reason here.

i)    This is the first film for the director Bharathiraja. Later he became one of the finest directors of Tamil Film Industry, along with K. Balachandar. Baharathiraja is usually known for his village subject and it is nice to know that he started of his carrier with a beautiful village subject.

ii)    This is the first Tamil movie, which was entirely shot in outdoor locations and no sets were used. Credit goes to Bharathiraja for changing the trend of Tamil Cinema. Many followed his path after seeing this film.

iii)    This is also the first color film for Rajinikanth and even though he was seen in major part of the movie in the negative role, you will be surprise to know the fact that only 3 days of call sheet were enough for Rajinikanth to complete his part in this movie.

iv)    This film was blockbuster and earned around 5 crores (Present value) and as a result of this the producer of the movie went hiding since the producer was afraid of Income tax problems.

Story line:

To start with let me just ask you to forget the present day cinema which involves all the graphics work because this film was completely shot in a village and it will never look as a movie, because it is so natural, thanks to the director and actors. So a practical story was handled very well by the debutant director “Bharathiraja”. So just imagine of a typical Indian village situation, before moving into further reading.

The film start sin a beautiful village and Mayil is considered as the beauty queen of the village. She is 16 years old and hence the name of the title. She has a dream and passion of becoming a teacher and so she wants to apply for a teaching job. Mayil’s mother (Gandhimadhi) was very much fond of her and also took a good care of Mayil. Another important character in this house is Chappani, who is Mayil’s cousin. Chappani like Mayil very much and he has his own dreams of marrying her. But on the other hand, Mayil never cared about Chappani and never thinks about the help done by Chappani.

At the same time the village has a gang, lead by Parrattai and their main takes is to make fun of everybody they see. Rajini the leader of this gang has the habit of teasing Chapani also and at the same time he uses Chappani very well to complete his entire task. The innocent Chappani doesn’t know about anything and he used to do every work assigned by the people of that village. He is also very good hearted and in once scene when some small boys of the village tried to kill a lizard, Chappani pleaded them not to kill and couldn’t tolerate the sufferings of the lizard. This is a great proof to explain the Chapani’s character.

Mayil, who is considered as the beauty queen, is always motivate by others that she will marry a well educated man, form a town. This made her to dream about her future and slowly and steadily she also decides to marry a well educated person. It was during this time a Doctor arrives to the village and it is shown as if they both were in love. But later Mayil realizes the truth, when the doctor tried to misbehave with her. This incident spreads like a fire and everyone doubts the character of Mayil. Parattai also tells badly about Mayil and stops her marriage. Later the death of Mayil’s mother has changed her entire character and she slowly understands the reality of who is working and helping for her benefit.

Slowly she was inspired by Chappani’s innocent character and also decides to marry Chappani. But Parratai, who always had an eye on Mayil tries to misbehave with Mayil when Chappani was not in home. But fortunately Chappani comes to that place and in order to save Mayil, this innocent man, kills Parattai. Then he was arrested and the film ends as Mayil waits for Chappani’s return.

Hope you enjoyed the review and I am sure you will enjoy the movie, when you watch it.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Movie Review :

hitch

Introduction :

The Term Hitchhiking refers to generally asking for a ride when you do not have a means of transportation. Hence as the name indicates, this movie is about hitch hiking a ride and the destination is the Galaxy. Therefore this movie belongs to the Science-Fiction category. This movie was actually based on the novel> Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy, written by Douglas Adams.

Cast and release information :

The novel is written by Douglas Adams as mentioned above and the Screen play is done by Karey Kirkpatrick. The movie is directed by Garth Jennings and produced by Robbie Stamp. Garth Jennings has also directed movies such as Hammer and Tongs and Son of Rambo. Though he has not directed many movies, he has done a very good job in making of the film, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The starrers are : Martin Freeman who plays the lead role, Mos Def who plays thr role of friend of the lead actor, Zooey Deschanel the lead actress, that is the girlfriend, Sam Rockwell who plays the role of being the president of the Galaxy, and others include Bill Nighy, Anna Chancellor, John Malkovich,Warwick Davis, and Alan Rickman. The run time of the movie is around two hours and provides a decent entertainment.

Story summary :

This movie starts with introduction of Dolphins at the water parks that run for entertainment and people come to watch the cheerful dolphins. It runs with the comedic state that the cheers and giggles posed by the dolphins which we assume to be play pranks made by them are nothing but warnings they are giving to the humans that the world is going to come to an end. And hence according to the writer, the dolphins are considered as the mature beings far more clever than the humans. They leave the planet earth and enter the vast space with a song called > So long and thanks for the fish.  This scene for beginners viewing it for the first time would be confusing as they do not understand what is going on when the dolphins get sucked into the space. What is actually being conveyed is that, the dolphins are clever creatures that should not extint when the earth destroys with the humans. Hence, the dolphins are considered more important than humans.

The next scene takes us to a man and his normal daily life. His name is Arthur. He lives far from the main city along the Green lawns. Apparently, he is the only person living there. He is supposed to vacate the premises as there is going to be a construction of local highway. But, he refuses to leave his house as the house would be demolished to pieces. He lays flat in front of his house to avoid them starting their work. Just then his friend, Ford comes with plenty of cans of beer and offers to take him for a drink and offers all the beer for the workers, so that they would be busy drinking. In the pub, Ford explains that the world is going to end in annother 5 minutes. Suddenly, when he hears some noices, they head out to see that the work on the demolition of the house is already started. the bigger problem is not only his house, but the entire planet is going to be destroyed in a couple of minutes. To escape from the tragedy, the hitchhike to leave earth.

When they Hitchhike, they get captured by the Vogon ship. Vogons are ugly creatures who are too dumb and rely on paper work than on common sense. The worst habit of Vogons is their poetry which is horrible to listen. It was them who actually destroy the planet Earth and who have successfully destroyed many other planets for the construction of an highway passing accross the universe. Arthur and Ford gets thrown out in the space for hitchhiking. Eventually, they get into the ship owned by the president. The president is out of control and goes in search of something called > The Ultimate Question. There he finds the girl whom he has net at a party and fell in love with. She does not know that the Earth was destroyed. Eventually they realize that the permission was give by the President who thought he was being asked for an autograph.

Review and Rating :

The story seems too random and misleading but the screenplay is good to watch and the animation was also effective to watch. The movie is best understood and enjoyed only when watched couple of times. Most of the audience might feel boring if the comedy aspect of the movie is not understood. Hence the movie is filled with adventure moving from one place to another in seek of the ultimate question. Hence the movie belongs to comedy adventure category.

I will give this movie a rating of  = 7 / 10 for Comedy. The roles played by all the acotors are supposed to promote humour and they have done a good job. The story content is not very exciting and hence the rating would be = 4 / 10. The story depth could have been creative. In most of the cases, i thought the story or the scenes were a bit silly. Though it has some action details,  It ia not an action movie as those are supposed to promote humour so the rating for this can be avoided. Just like most of the Science fiction movies in English, the animation and Graphics content is excellent to watch and has a very ppealing look. I will rate the Graphics =  7 / 10. There is a little bit of Romance but once again not a romantic category of movie. The boring and silly scenes occupy half of the movie, therefore the Overall rating for the movie would be 6 / 10. This movie is fine to watch up to a maximum of five times as long as the comedy is understood.

Hence the film, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy  need not be completely avoided. It can be watched when shown in the Television but need not buy it in form of DVDs as the DVD content is also not interesting and would be a waste of money. The DVD consists of some deleted scenes, no Bloopers which might be fun, and some simple game to play. This movie remained one among the Top 10 in the box office for the first four weeks.

Slamming Slumdog Millionaire -Rightly or Wrongly?

No comments on “Slamming Slumdog Millionaire -Rightly or Wrongly?”

The critics and reviewers and film buffs either went gaga or hysterical in their reactions to the announcement of the Oscar award for the film “ The Slumdog Millionaire “ which reminds me of similar reactions when the celebrated filmmaker Satyajit Ray's maiden venture “ Panther Panchali” won a prestigious award first time for the country which too eminently succeeded in capturing the human drama in poverty. The late actress Nargis even described the film maestro as a “peddler of poverty” an uncharitable remark on work of someone who was a pioneer in neo-realistic films in India. Similarly Danny Boyle's Oscar winning film “The Slumdog Millionaire “ has drawn criticism from various quarters. Some see in it the too familiar “conspiracy theory” of the West to humiliate India by exposing her soft underbelly and to some it was a realistic portrayal of a part of our existence.

What does the film portray which is based on a novel “ Q & A “ by Vikas Swarup? As the film unfolds the story of a youngster whose success in the quiz programme “ Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” came under the scrutiny of host and subsequent police interrogation and torture had all the melodramatic elements. And as the film progresses we get to see through the eyes of the film protagonist Jamal and other hapless members of his family the cruel world and its weird ways of survival. They are made to flee from riots in Mumbai which claims their mother to Agra taking to stealing shoes from the tourists at the Taj Mahal etc. There is the shocking tale of Latika the childhood lover of Jamal who is sexually exploited by the gang controlling child beggars and other lurid details.

The film just presents the pangs of a society in transition. The face of India is changing fast and very fast indeed. There are big luxurious high-rises coming up at the the places where slums existed and what happens to dwellers in these slums and to their lives and livelihood and the great human drama involving their struggle for existence, its triumphs and tragedies have been well captured in this film.

Whether it merits an Oscar award could be the subject of a debate but the theme the director has chosen to base his film upon ,is one of the searing realities in India which we can not shut our eyes to .

Magadheera is a Telugu film starring Ram Charan Teja and Kajal in the lead. It had been the talk on every film goer’s mouth during the last days of its release and for a couple of months after that. With a budget of approximately INR 450,000,000, the film is indeed a mega-budget one which exhibited “technical brilliance” and “a visual grandeur”. It is the only one of its kind in the Indian film industry to date, especially in Tollywood.  The picture was finally released world wide in the last week of July 2009 after about two years of toil.

Review:

Although the plot of the film is not very complicated, it is the general presentation, coupled with the lavish use of arts and 3D-graphics, which has made all the difference. The Visual Effects supervisor, Sanath and the art director Ravinder did a wonderful job at that. The actor Ram Charan, himself being a trained horse rider, has managed to accomplish his part in the second half with ease. Kajal, with her good looks and action, has also done full justice to her role. Great attention was paid to every aspect of the film-the costumes, the artillery, the designs, the art, the graphics, the lighting etc. The comedy touches by Sunil and Brahmanandam in the first half of the film is reasonably good.  The picturisation is also splendid, thanks to the able cameramen and other technicians. A special appearance of the megastar Chiranjeevi is a highlight to the film, though not a part of the actual story.

The music rendered by M.M Keeravani is excellent. One of the songs in the film Panchadara bomma bomma is a musical hit, while another song Dheera Dheera Dheera, though a slow moving one, has good lyrics.

The film is truly a must-see, especially for those who are interested in socio-mythological sort of films. The concept of “punarjanma” (reincarnation) is nicely shown and the emotions of romance, heroism and hatred are well-depicted in this 2-1/2 hour movie.

No wonder that Magadheera became the first Indian film to be screened for 50 days in more than 300 centers and with a gross collection exceeding 100 crores. It has proved that Indian fim industry is capable of producing films on the lines of Hollywood.
