Today Tamil cinema after completing 77 years of history has grown to such an extent, that it is released all over the world even in countries like Japan.

 

In olden days of tamil cinema ( may be upto late 60's ) if somebody wants to act in films, they should know alteast any one art ( Singing / Dancing ), should speak tamil fluently

( as there was no dubbing in that period ),should know acting and should have a good look. So the actors and actresses in that period were very talented and also competition was

less at that time.Films in this period had more songs ( some films even had ten songs ) ,lengthy dialogues, sentiment, comedy, fight etc.

 

Now-adays i don't think people need to have all those mentioned above to act in a tamil film. If somebody has got a good producer that's enough,he/she can act in a film. They don't

even need to know tamil language ( As dubbing is available ).Almost all actresses in tamil cinema these days are from north india or southern part of india.But sustaining in tamil

cinema these days is very difficult because so much competition is there not only in acting but also in music direction, cinematography ,direction etc. Also it is difficult to predict

which film will be a hit as sometimes a new comer's film runs for 50 days and a super actor's film becomes an utter flop.Because of the advent in technology, a good DVD of a

new film reaches the market with in a month though pirated DVDs comes within a week.So lot of luck is needed nowadays for a film to be a superhit.

 

Ok. Let's see the journey of tamil cinema from where it has started.

1920's :

In this period only silent movies were produced.Films were produced in Chennai and sent to northern part of India for technical processing.The first silent tamil fim was

'Keechaka Vadham' produced and directed by R.Nataraja mudaliar.

1930's:

During this period the first talking film 'Kalidas' was produced.Kalidas was directed by H.M.Reddy.The heroine of this film was T.P.Rajalakshmi. This period marked the debut

for M.K.Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, the great singer with 'Pavalakodi', P.U.Chinnappa with 'Chandrakantha'. Bhagavathar also gave some more hit films which include 'Chintamani',

'Ambikapthy','Thiruneelakantar'. Ambikapthy and chintamani ran for more than a year.Ambikapathy was directed by the American film director Ellis.R.Dungan.

 

N.S.Krishnan (NSK ) famously known as "Kalaivanar" made his debut with the film 'Ambikapathy'. One cannot forget the combination of NSK and T.A.Madhuram in many movies.

The greatest chief minister of tamilnadu Mr.M.G.Ramachandran popularly known as MGR also made debut in this film but not as a hero.Raja Sandow was the famous producer

and director during this period.

1940's:

Whenever we think of this period the first film that comes in to our mind immediately is the film 'Haridas'.M.K.Thyagaraja Bhagavathar popularly known as MKT,was the hero

of this film and T.R.Rajakumari played the female lead role. NSK and T.A.madhuram took care of the comedy. This film run successfully for more than 2 years which was an

achievement in those days.Today we cannot imagine a film which will run successfully even for 100 days.

AVM productions ( more than 60 years old and surviving till today ) was born during this period with its first film 'Naam Iruvar'.Another famous productions 'Gemini Studios'

was also born during this period which produced the most expensive tamil cinema ( Close to 30 lakhs )'Chandralekha'. The flim was released all over India and was a big hit .

One cannot forget the wonderful drum dance in this movie till now.MGR's first movie as hero named 'Rajakumaari' was released during this period.

 

1950's:

This period marked the debut of the greatest ever actor of Tamil as well as Indian cinema 'Chevaliye' Sivaji Ganesan with the film 'Parasakthi'. I don't wish to write

about Sivaji ganesan here because pages are not enough to write about that wonderful actor.The lyrics of this film was written by our honourable chief minister M.K.Karunanidhi.

'Kadhal Mannan'( King of Romance ) Gemini ganesan made his debut in early 50's but he got popularity only in mid 50's.One cannot forgot the song 'Kadhalile Tholviyutral'

from the film 'Kalyana parisu' acted by Gemini ganesan released during the late 50's. First colour film in Tamil 'Alibabavum Narpadhu Thirudargalum' starring MGR was

released during this time.Actresses Savitri made her debut with the film 'Samsaram' and Saroja devi with 'Nadodi Mannan'.

MGR's 100th film.Sivaji acted in many historical and religious films during this period.

 

'Padamashree' Kamalhassan made his debut as child artist in the film 'Kalathur Kannamma'. Kamal has introduced many new technlogies in tamil cinema.He has proved

that a person's look can be changed to anything through make up. Former chief minister Jayalalitha made her debut with the film 'Vennira Aadai'.Veteran film director

Balachander who has directed around 100 films made his debut with the film 'Deivathai' starring MGR and Jayalalitha.Veteran comedian Nagesh got a breakthrough

Whenever we think of tamil cinema music, we can remember the three great music directors M.S.Viswanathan, Illayaraja and A.R.Rehman.

 

 

M.S.Viswanathan :

M.S.Viswanathan has contributed much to the tamil cinema during 60's and 70's.He is fondly called by the people of tamilnadu as 'Mellisai Mannar'.I think he is the

only successful music director who has worked with the superstars of two generations ( Sivaji,MGR) ( Kamal,Rajni ).He is not only a music director but also a very

A.R.Rahman:

Rahman has taken the tamil music across tamilnadu,across India and all over the world.He mixed the electronic instruments with traditional musical instruments

and created a new style of music. He introduced many new singers in the industry.He made the 'Vande Mataram' album for 50th anniversary of Indian independence.

He got the prestigeous oscar award for the song 'Jai Ho' ( Slumdog Millionaire ).Nowadays he is working more in Hollywood films than tamil films.Some of his popular

songs are 'Chinna Chinna Asai' ( Roja ),'Kannalane' ( Bombay ), 'Telephone mani pol' ( Indian ),'Mukkala Muqabla' ( Kaadhalan ),'Mitwa' ( Lagaan ) etc.

Comedy:

It is very difficult to make a person laugh continuosly for 5 minutes.That's really a gift.Tamil cinema has seen different varieties of comedy.

Chandrababu:

He was a great comedian ( as well as singer ) during late 40's to 70's.Especially chandrababu has given many philisophical songs with social reforming ideas .His acting

resembled the famous english comedian 'Charlie Chaplin'.His famous songs include 'Puthiyulla Manidharellam' ( Annai ),'Sirippu Varudhu Sirippu Varudhu'

(Andavan Kattalai),'Bambara Kannale' (Manamagan Thevai),'Unakkaga Ellam Unakkaga' (Pudhayal ) etc.

N.S.Krishanan:

NSK's comedy tracks not only made us laugh but also made to think.He used to write the dialogues on his own.His comedy always had a message.He and his wife

T.A.madhuram were a good comedy pair those days.He was a favourite person for the honourable chief minister of Tamilnadu Mr.M.Karunanidhi.He was also a good

singer.Some of his popular films are Panam,Madurai veeran,Manamagal,Yar paiyan etc.

The ultimate song sung by him is 'Sirippu'( Rajarani ) in which he explains the different categories of laughing.

Nagesh:

Nagesh was a great comedian during 60's to 70's.He was a good dancer and also acted in character roles.His body language and timing of the dialogue delivery were

excellent. One cannot forgot his comedy in the films 'Thiruvilayadal' ( A character named Dharumni asking questions to lord shiva),'Kaadhalikka Neramillai'

( A character trying to become a film director),'Ethir Neechal' ( A character named madhu ).

Goundamani & Senthil:

This pair dominated the tamil cinema for more than two decades.Their comedy is purely an entertainer.Mostly goundamani will be scolding and beating senthil

and in every film they introduced new words for scolding.Some comedy tracks of this pair are still best entertainers even today but some are monotonous.All time

best comedy tracks of this pair are from the films Karakattakaran,Chinna Kounder,Jai Hind etc.

Vivek:

He is called 'Chinna Kalaivanar' as he is giving social reformic ideas in his films after N.S.kalaivanar.He used to praise our former president Abdul kalam in

his films.He attacked many superstitious beliefs in his films.He is more popular in urban areas as his comedy mostly surrounds them.His best ones are

Saami,Run,Minnale,Kushi etc.

Vadivelu:

He is fondly called 'Black nagesh'.His facial expressions and dialogue delivery made him very popular in rural as well as urban areas.His best comedy

tracks are 'Vetri kodi kattu' ( Along with Parthiban ),'Chandramukhi' ( With Rajini), 'Winner' ( With Prashanth ) etc

Female comedians:

Not very female comedians are there in tamil cinema. But the noted ones are Manorama, Sachu, Kovai sarala etc. Manorama fondly called as 'Achi' who acted

in more than 1000 films initially acted in comic roles in the early part of the career.Later she went for character roles.

Sachu paired with nagesh,Cho etc but not acted in many films.Kovai sarala along with goundamani and senthil acted only in comedy roles.

 

Heroines:

Today we are seeing a new heroines in almost every film but the popular ones are very.Also heroines have only little scope for acting nowadays and

they are mainly used for glamour with a few exceptions.

Good old heroines ( 50's to 70's ) are Savithri, Saroja devi,Padmini ,Bhanumathi etc. Savithri was called 'Nadigaiyar Thilagam'. Saroja devi attracted with

her sweet childish talk and Padmini by her excellent dance and acting.

Later heroines ( 80's to 2000 ) are Radhika,Radha,Ambika,Revathi,Khushboo,Nadhiya,Amala,Meena,Roja,Madhavi,Bhanupriya etc.

Khushboo is the most popular among all of these. Her fans built a temple for her.

Radhika is an ever green actress. Nadhiya is famous for her smile and hair-dos during that period.Radha and Ambika acted in many films

as pair for Rajini and Kamal.

Most popular modern day heroines are Simran, Jyothika, Laila etc.

Directors:

Good directors of old cinema are Sridhar,S.P.Muthuraman,A.Bhimsingh,K.Shankar,Neelakandan etc.

Ever green 'B' directors of tamil cinema are Bharathiraja ,Balumahendra and Balachander.

Maniratnam is a distinguished director . He has given new dimension to tamil cinema and  helped it to grow across tamilnadu.

Shankar's films are released all over the world though he has directed only few films. Also he is  giving good films as a producer.

Many new directors are coming nowadays but the popular directors of tamil cinema are Shankar,K.S.Ravikumar,Bala,Cheran,Selvaraghavan,Gowtham menon,

Villans:

Tamil cinema has seen many villans but the greatest are only few. Nowadays you can see new villan in every film, and there is no great significance in their acting.

They just do fighting and say some punch dialogues.

Some of the villans who had a different style in their acting are Nambiyar, R.S.Manohar , Raghuvaran, Radharavi, Prakashraj,Sathyaraj etc.

Singers:

We can see new voices in every film now and it is very difficult to recognise the voices. The tamil songs now use lot of english words, stylish pronounciations etc .

Story line:

The moive set in Trichy, is all about an honest police constable Rajkiran, who dreams of making his son, Ajith a sub-inspector of police. Rajarajan's guiding principle is to be a faithful guardian for the public. He leads a tranquil life with his huge family comprising a caring wife (Saranya), three sons, two daughters and a jobless son-in-law (Vivek). Rajarajan has only one goal in life, to make his eldest son Sakthivel a policeman like him.

Sakthi bumps into Divya (Trisha), a jovial college student and after a few comic encounters they become closer. Eventually they both fall in love. Both the families agree for their marriage. Suddenly the situation changes when Rajarajan slaps the son of the local MLA for humiliating policeman in public.The MLA pressurize Rajarajan to apologize but he remains stubborn and refuses to yield to their threats. As a punishment, Rajarajan is transferred to Kodiyakkarai, which is terrorized by a notorious gangster Varadarajan (Ajay).

Nevertheless, even in his new posting, Rajarajan is sucked deeper into problems, for no fault of his.On the day when Sakthi was to get selected as an Sub Inspector, an incident happens which turns their life topsy-turvy. However, Sakthi is not the one to be cowed down by threats. One thing leads to another and Ajith ends up thrashing the villain and now the wounded villain is keen to take revenge. And the rest of the movie is all about how Ajith faces the problem and whether he becomes the inspector or not.

 

How he fulfils his father's ambition comes in an interesting presentation in the second half of the movie.Kreedom's post interval session seems to delve deep on melodrama which will undoubtedly bring the fairer sex to the theatres. One such scene is where Ajith is sent out by his father due to a tussle which makes him loaf around the town and enter his house late in the night. On his re-entry, Ajith’s Mother, Saranya, beckons him to have food and at that instant, all the members of the household come out with their eating plates, not having eaten a morsel of food without him the entire day.

On hearing the news that Shaktivel is getting into lots of trouble by the gangster group, Divya's family where tensed about their daughter's marriage.In the mean time Sakthi is framed as don by the locals there on beating Varadarajan in the market. Divya's father comes to Kodiyakkarai to get the correct status of Sakthi. While coming in the bus he finds Sakthi chased by a group of gangster on seeing this he returns home without visting Sakthi's.Then a number of incidence occur against Sakthi and his father gets stressed of his son's activities.

Sakthi goes to Trichy to get rid of the problems.In the mean time here in Kodiyakkarai Sakthi's family members are being attacked by Varadarajan's group and they are all hospitalised.On hearing this news Sakthi rushes to the hospital and sees his mother and his brother in serious condition.Sakthi makes up his mind to take revenge on Varadarajan and asks his brother to fulfil his father's dream of becoming a sub-inspector of police.Sakthi then goes to Varadarajan's place and their fight begins and in the middle of the fight Rajarajan and two constable arrive to the scene.
Rajarajan asks his son to leave Varadarajan but Sakthi kills him and starts crying for having done a great mistake.

The locals celebrate the death of Varadarajan.In the police station Sakthi's file asking for his behaviour is send from the police headqouaters, the inspector in charge in that station asks Rajarajan to tell what to do as it his son's life.Rajarajan says that Sakthi is not fit for police job.Sakthi's name is entered in the criminals list.On a scale of 5 the movie will be in the rating of  3.9 / 5.

i)This film was written and directed by the famous Iranian director Bahman Ghobadi.Before this film Bahman Ghobadi  has directed lots of short film and also two movies that includes A Time for Drunken Horses and Marooned in Iraq and after Turtles fly he has directed Half Moon and No One Knows About Persian Cats.Even though the director has explained the concept of Peace in a complex manner,it could be understood.The message of this particular film is very simple "No war ... i)Soran Ebrahim as Satellite.His original name is Soran.He is one of the important character in this film and the reason why he is called as Satellite is that he use to install satellite dish in the nearby villages along the border.He also helps all the refugee children.He is like a boss to all the children but he also has a kind heart.He was very much attracted by an Halabcheh girl Agrin and he often helps her before she asks him.He also exchanges mines for the weapons as the Americans were ready for the war.In the climax he also tries to save the small boy and even before that he injures himself in a mine as he was trying to save the small boy.

ii)Hiresh Feysal Rahman as Hengov and he is the refugee from Halabcheh and he is the brother of Agrin.He is a very special character in this film as he had the power of clairvoyance, i.e, predicting the future.He also saves a number of children when he predicted that one of the shell may explode.He even sees his sister's and the small boy's death.In the climax he also predicts that after 275 days a problem will come to that village again.

iii)Avaz Latif as Agrin and she always looks sad.She is the sister of Hengov and she always hates the small kid.But in the flash back scene it was shown that Agrin was raped several years ago and that small kid is the child of Agrin.She also commits suicide in the climax.In fact the opening scene itself was shown as if she was trying to attempt suicide and the entire story is just like a flashback.

 

iV)Saddam Hossein Feysal as Pashow and he is one of the assistant and friend of Satellite.He lost his right leg and he is also very kind to all.He does any work assigned by Satellite.He usually helps all children who are present in rfugee along with Satellite.

 

v)Ajil Zibari as Shirkooh and he is also another friend and very loyal assistant of Satellite.He is the youngest of all and he likes Satellite ver much and he also cares for him.He even went to the extent of crying when Satellite was trying to rescues the small kid.At the climax he also presents Satellite the Sadam's statue's arm which he took from the city and also a red fish to Satellite.He is a very sensitive character who often cries and also very faithful to Satellite.

Apart from these characters other character includes the village elder and that too the character called Esmaeel and he also has good sense of humor as silently requested Satellite not to show prohibited channels when they bought a dish tv, for knowing the war news.

Hi friends in this article let us discuss about the story of the film "Varanam Ayiram"

The film starts when Krishan(older Surya) was not feeling well and after returning from walking he blood vomits and then his condition goes critical.Then the doctor comes in and says that he was no more.Then the news is passed to his sun Surya who was the major in The Indian Army and also a NSG commander.

Surya was flying in a helicopter when he received the information and in spite of father's death he request his chief to continue the operation.Still he has got time to reach the destination and in this time Surya starts to think about his father.He also remembers his past where his mother was narrating their love story.

Then the film goes to the flash back and Malini(Simran - Surya's mother) refreshing her college life when she was proposed by Krishnan.At this time, the first song of the film ,"Munthinam parthene...." will entertain us and it is so pleasing to hear and this song and the singers Naresh Iyer and Prashanthini have won many awards for this song.

In fact all the songs in this film were super hit, thanks to the music director Harris Jayaraj and Lyricist Thamai.In this particular song Krishnan comes has a college boy in 1980's and most of the song's shooting was taken in Puducherry.The director made sure that all the hair style and dressing remembers the 80's.

Then Malini married Krishan and Surya was born and at that time they were staying in a small house but they were happy.After some years Shreya, Surya's sister, was born in Calicut.It was also shown that Surya gets lost for a while when the family went for beach and from that time Surya deceided he will always be with his father and never forget him.

Then the family gets shifted from Calicut to chennai and Surya and his dad came in a lorry with the luggage.Krishnan found that the driver was drunken and so he doesn't wants to take risk as his son was staying with him and he starts to drive the lorry and asked Surya not to tell her mother.

Then Surya grows up and  his father become a role model for him as he taught everything that includes how to bowl swing bowling in cricket.Even he was the inspiration for Surya in music as Krishnan encouraged Surya whenever Surya plays guitar by dancing with Malini.

But Krishnan had the habit of smoking.Once he also asks Surya not to smoke as he does as it was bad for health.When Surya asked his dad, then why he was smoking, his father replied he had this habit from his college days.He also advices him not to talk with girls in road and gave permission to invite his girlfriends to house.Meanwhile Surya was threatened and  by some college guys thinking that Surya was in love with his classmate Arthi.In fact they injured Surya by slapping in his face.

Surya was very angry and after seeing his frustrations Krishnan asked Surya to do the right thing.Surya understood this and the next day he goes and meet that college boy and he also beats him.After beating that college boy Sury was ver happy and says he will speak with Arthi and no one can stop him.

During this sequence next song comes,i.e "Yethi Yethi...." sung by Benny Dayal, Naresh Iyer and Solar Sai.This song contains dances in michael Jakson style which was taken in sets and also in roadside.This was a very fast song and it was also hit.

Then Surya joins Sri Moogambikai college in Trichi and there during first year he was also subjected to ragging, but later as the days went he excelled in music and later during the third year he was very brave and was not afraid of anybody.He didn't study well and had arrears.After finishing his final exams he left Trichi to Chennai and in the train he met Meghna(Sameera Reddy).

At first he was excited and he didn't speak to her.But later to his suprise Meghna introduce herself to Surya and said she already saw him in her college,REC Trichy during a musical competition.Later Surya proposes her and Meghna was shocked to hear this.Then he takes his guitar and starts to play the famous Tamil song "En Iniya Pon Nilave...."

But couldn't understand how he could propose her at first sight and she is not intereseted in love at first sigh

The Surya asks her three questions

i)Are you married?

ii)Do you have any lover?

iii)Are you engaged?

When Meghna gave negative answer for all the questions Surya challenges here that wherever she go he will come and marry her.Then she asks her sory for disturbing her and also ashs her to take rest.Then he takes his guitar and he sang his own composition song "Nenjikul Peythidum".

When the film was released this song "Nenjikul Peythidum..." sung by Hariharan was a smash hit and every TV channels used to play this song and all college students and many others used to hum this songs.The picturization of the song was also superb that includes settings and also taken in Taj Mahal.The theme of the song is the dream sequence where Surya imagines dancing with Meghna in many wonderful locations that also includes Taj Mahal, Taj hotel Mumbai.

Then they reach Chennai and after that Surya finds that his father has to pay debts and after watching this he temporarily starts a company and gets a project from TVS and manages to pay the debt and also finishes their unfinished construction work of their new house.

After that all were happy and he comes to Meghna again and but this time she was shocked to hear that Meghna was leaving to USA for higher studies.Inspite of this, Surya promised he will come and meet her wherever she go and whatever part of the world it may be.

Then Surya applys for American Visa and there when he was asked about the reason he said that her girl was there in USA and he needs to go and take her back again.He was also granted visa and he also thanks his dad who encouraged him to go to USA.

Then he goes to USA and he starts to search for Meghna in the university she was studying.There he managed to find her address and also reaches her home and all these incidents were beautifully taken with the help of the background song "Neyindri Nanumillai....Om Shanti Om Shanti...." by Clinton and S.P.B. Charan.

Then he stays with her for 90 days and another super hit song "Adiyen Kolluthe..." sung by Benny Dayal, Krish and Shruti Haasan will please your ears.This was taken mostly across the University of California and also  in many places in that city, and this song appears in the screen when Meghna accepts Surya's love.

But tragedy occurs when Meghna was killed in a bomb blast.Surya calls her parents and informs the death of his lover.This is a very touching scene as he cries while he talks to his parents.Fantastic acting performance by Surya and his expression was awesome.

Then he returns to India and he couldn't forget Meghna and as a result he starts using drug.He also become an addict and couldn't stay without his drugs.At this time she meets Priya, Krishnan's friend's daughter.Later in the film it was shown that Priya was having soft corner for Surya right form her young age.

While he was addicted to drugs, he sings a song callled "Ava ena ena thedivantha Anjale" thinking of Meghna and this song has won many awards as it was the most listened song by the audience that year.This was sung by Karthik and prasanna and this is a folk song.

When he was crossing his limits as he started to use more drugs Krishnan tries to stop him and after some point Krishnan asks him to go to some tourist place where his mind will be changed and relaxed.So Surya leaves for Kashmir and there could realise some change as he begins to control of drugs.

There he found that Aditya who was the son of Shankar Menon was kidnapped.He already knew Shankar Menon, when he met him while he was travelling back to India after losing Meghna in USA.In fact Shankar Menon was the man who tried to help him when he was depressed.

So Surya decides to help Aditya and some how he managed to rescue Aditya from the terrorist gang.While he was staying in Shankar Menon house he was very happy playing with Aditya and as a matter of fact this has changed his mind an he was started to think of his new life.

Then he comes to Chennai and informs his parents about his desire to join the Army.First Malini hesitates as he was the only son, but Krishnan later explained the situation and got permission for Surya.Then he attends training and he also become an NSG commander and most of the scenes in this part were taken in Indian Military Academy.

Then Priya comes to the Academy to meet Surya.Then both fell in love and after that they get married and have a son.This was featured by a beautiful Carnatic song "Annal Maele...." sung by  Sudha Raghunathan.This was a very pleasant song nad this is the favourites ong of the film's director Gautam Vasudev Menon.

Suddenly one day Krishnan dies due to throat cancer and the film returns to present.By this time Surya who was the Commando reaches the destination where the terrorist have kidnapped some journalist and a masked man, who was Gautam, shows the exact location of the terrorists.

After this successful rescue operation, Surya returns home to see his father.Then Surya,Priya,Malini and Shriya let go his father ashes in the sea an Malini says that Surya's father will always be watching us and the film ends when all the four walk away smiling
