This romance and fantasy novel, written by Stephenie Meyer, revolves around Isabella Swan, who likes to be called Bella, a seventeen year old stubborn, klutzy girl who comes to live in the town of Forks, of which she has had an aversion since she was a kid. She comes from Phoenix, which is a dry, cheerful, sunny place, to Forks, which is one of the wettest places in the country of USA.
The reason behind it is explained well and it makes us love Bella for her magnanimity. She misses everything about Phoenix and mainly her loving, erratic mother who travels with her new husband Phil. Her father is her only company here in Forks and he is Chief of Police. Her father tries to make her life less difficult in Forks. The bond between the father and his Forks-hating daughter is touching. Bella hates everything about Forks until she meets the inhumanly beautiful Cullen family, at school. Bella is awestruck by their beauty and unnerved when Edward Cullen, the most handsome boy, displays unexplained hostility towards her. She is intrigued by his continued absence, and when she finally gets over her discomfort about his absence, which, she somehow feels, that is due to her, he turns up and things start to get friendly between them. Bella encounters two near death experiences from which she is saved by Edward under impossible-to-save circumstances. Bella suspects that there is something more about the Cullens other than their looks. It is then that she gets friendly with Jacob Black, her family friend, whose family believes that they are descended from werewolves. They despise the Cullen family and claim that they are vampires. Bella refrains herself from believing it, but, it turns out that Jacob Black was actually right. The relationship between Bella and Edward grow stronger as Edward eventually tells Bella the truth about him and his family. Bella, instead of fearing them, is actually infatuated by them. Edward insists that his family of vegetarian type, that is, vampires who do not prey on human beings. Bella finds herself irrevocably in love with Edward and gets immeasurable love in return. As Bella gets accustomed to her great, new life, she unexpectedly meets a coven of human-preying vampires who are determined to kill her. Edward and his family do their utmost in trying to save her. At this point, the action starts and it keeps the readers enthralled till the end. The relationship, that Bella and Edward share, is highly exotic. The unexpected turn out of events and an exciting climax keep the readers entertained.
