80 characters is the limit. Generally people do not post on forums just for points rather to participate in contests, or just to share the information with others.
Since the forums should be as clean as possible, it is not possible to reduce the limit.

Yes abid. many times, i have received no points for short messages. A message appears- "your reply is too short to earn points." Even then, i do not write unnecessarily more words if the shorter message suffices.

I think it all depends on the context and the member's ability to express himself or herself adequately which is should be the determining factor.A floor of 80 characters is reasonable.

It seems this thread is bit older. We have changed the character requirement from 80 to 50 recently.

Apart from eight characters, it should be seen that anything written only for gaining points is permitted. Just chatting or writing some routine words daily like 'hare Krishna' and so on should not be allowed points. Otherwise the purpose of site- that is information sharing- will be frustrated.

This is a good move for increasing the forum participation. But i think 80 points should be retained. Otherwise quality of the forum posts can be reduced.
