Red colour in vehicles always symbolises danger or stop. So traffic signal is red in colour and turns to stop vehicles.

The red light contains the quality of a dominant wavelength, can be seen from long distance... and control the speed.....
Other reason is "RED" color is easily distinguesed by people with color-blindness..... to provide some support for those people too.....
And Traffic light colors are universal color codes.
