The S stands for "Secure". If you visit a website or webpage, and look at the address in the web browser, it will likely begin with the following: http://. - This means that the website is talking to your browser using the regular 'unsecure' language. In other words, it is possible for someone to "eavesdrop" on your computer's conversation with the website. If you fill out a form on the website, someone might see the information you send to that site.

    There are different services of http and https. Where we need to login or some some credential information is needed there, then https is used.

    In online banking https is used.

    https // being used for security especially by payment transactions but almost all big sites like google, yahoo, twitter, Facebook . This in fact is proof of site's authentication, one can provide his data on such sites comparatively. This is more important in case the customer is using WiFi networks.

    The main use of https is for security. I have seen the paypal and moneybookers, which uses https when login is done.

    Thanks for the details Usha, many people actually do not know the difference between two. I would just like to add that whenever you do any purchasing online via credit, debit cards of by putting in your bank details etc,. you need to make sure that the payment gateway is https:// and not simply http:// because if the site is not secured, then your bank and credit card details can be easily hacked into.
